Millersville University’s marketing students took sixth place in the national Produce for Better Health Foundation Formula 5 marketing competition. The students on the team from Dr. Lexi Hutto’s marketing class included Karly Wiest, Eric Country and Kyle Dentler.

This is the second year for the annual competition, which offers marketing majors at U.S. colleges a chance to influence fruit and vegetable marketing. A panel of five judges scored each presentation based on business proposition, financials, marketing tactics, measurements, viability of the product and marketing proposal.

According to Dr. Hutto, the challenge was to draft a marketing plan for a fresh, frozen, canned or juice version of a fruit or vegetable. The team could either create a brand or put together a generic version of their idea. The Millersville team’s brand was Go Pineapple!, a fresh-cut pineapple product for convenience stores and vending machines.

“Pineapples have amazing nutritional value, not to mention being delicious and liked by most people,” says Dr. Hutto. “My class had three of the 36 submissions to the competition which were sent in by 11 different universities.”

Other MU submissions included a pickle brand called Creeping Vine Pickling Company, pomegranate juice, packaged kale and ready-to-freeze Fruit Cubes packaged fruit and water in ice cube trays.
