1950s
Victor Bove ’54, Lancaster, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Council 867 of the Knights of Columbus where he is a fourth degree knight. Previously, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Saint Joseph’s College in Maine in 1996 and the Distinguished Service Award by Millersville University in 1984. In 2005, he was featured as one of MU’s 150 distinguished alumni in the book 150 Years of MU Faces.
William Zagarino ’55, Northport, N.Y., was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in April 2016. He has been a member of the Friends of Long Island Wrestling for many years.
Joseph DeFranco ’59, Bensalem, is a faculty member in the College of Education at Temple University. He was recognized for 25 years of service in June 2016.
1960s
Edward Goodhart ’63, Lancaster, celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary to Judy (Stout) Goodhart ’65 in 2015.
Victor Hughes ’67, Waynesboro, has been teaching mathematics for 49 years. He began his career teaching junior high mathematics and is currently teaching development mathematics at the Shepherd University, West Virginia.
J. Richard Landis ’69, Philadelphia, is a professor of biostatistics in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment as a professor of statistics in the Wharton School.

Sharon McNair ’70, Royersford, retired after 24 years from Rockland Immunochemicals where she worked as a chemist.
James Miller ’70, Williamston, Mich., was elected a 2015 fellow of the Entomological Society of America for his pioneering research in insect physiology, chemical ecology and behavior.
Samuel Walker ’70, Collegeville, retired after working 35 years as an operating engineer at IUOE Local 825.
Kathleen Heil ’71, Lusby, Md., retired after working 33 years as a librarian and library director at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science
Joan Detz ’73, Millersville, has been published in Spanish by Alba Editorial of Barcelona. Her book, Cómo Escribir y Pronunciar un Discurso, is widely available in bookstores throughout Spain and is sold electronically worldwide.
L. Marlin Eby ’73, Mechanicsburg, is a professor of statistics at Messiah College.
Susan (Van Rensler) Elder ’73, Drexel Hill, retired after working 40 years as the director of parks, recreation and leisure services at Upper Darby Township.
Janine Johnson ’73, Anna, Texas, was elected in September 2015 as the chair of the Planning & Zoning Commission for the City of Anna.
Cheryl (Hastings) Leask ’73, Langhorne, is a transition support specialist at the HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy in Philadelphia.
Kathy Horne ’74, Lancaster, was named “HR Person of the Year” in December 2015 by the Lancaster Society for Human Resource Management. She is a business partner at Smilebuilderz dental practice in Lancaster.
Butler Buchanan ’76, Ambler, is the managing attorney of the law offices of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, at their headquarters in Philadelphia.
Robert Leedon ’76, Chesapeake, Va., traveled to Alaska in August 2015 with several other Millersville University alumni.
Marilyn (Gazzillo) Hansen ’79, Princeton Junction, N.J., has become a senior volunteer at Riding High Farm, a therapeutic riding facility for children and adults with disabilities.
Phillip Walker ’79, Philadelphia, joined the executive staff of The Original Profender organization, a sports training and skills development company founded by MU alumnus Tony Devine ’94. Phillip is also the managing principal of the W2 Group, a business and market development consulting firm specializing in sustainable technologies.
Darlene (Shollenberger) Wenhold ’79, Allentown, retired after 36 years as a learning facilitator for the Quakertown Community School District.
1980s
Dr. Kevin Dixon ’81, Columbus, Ohio, is vice president of community and cultural engagement at the Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Board of Franklin County. He was recently featured in an article in the Columbus African American News Journal.
Rob Grant ’81, Kennett Square, joined 1st Advantage Mortgage in 2015 as senior vice president. Previously, he completed terms as vice president of the Swiftwater Preserve and as President of the Brandywine Valley Association.
Kevin Mahoney ’81, Malvern, received the Echoes 2015 Call to Care Award and the Irish American Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 Award in 2015.
Paul MacNamara ’84, Mechanicsburg, swam in the 24-hour Gold Star Teen Adventure Freedom Challenge in November 2015. His team raised over $60K to help provide exciting outdoor experiences for the children of fallen warriors. He is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces Lt. Colonel.
Barry Bertolet ’88, Phoenix, Ariz., received certification as a national board certified teacher in November 2015. He teaches high school ceramics in the Phoenix Union High School District.
Margaret “Maggie” (Esbenshade) Espinosa ’88, La Mesa, Calif., published a book, On a Mission, about her 800-mile walk to visit California’s 21 missions.
Andy Hershey ’88, Paradise, teaches physics at Lancaster Mennonite High School.
Scott Jacobs ’88, Laurel, Md., was the recipient of the 2015 Russell L. DeSouza award from the University Corporation of Atmospheric Research and Unidata, based in Boulder Co. The award honors individuals whose energy, expertise and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve geoscience. The award is named after a former Millersville University Earth Sciences professor.
Laura (Whaley) Receveur ’88, Ridley Park, is an adjunct professor for the School of Education at Drexel University, after having taught special education for 28 years.
Edwin “Ned” Bustard ’89, Lancaster, helped publish a book in 2015, Revealed: A Storybook Bible for Grown-Ups.
Kurt Hoffeditz ‘89, Chambersburg, was named as chief information officer for the Franklin County Commissioners. He previously worked as infrastructure manager and IT consultant with Global Data Consultants, LLC.
1990s
Julie Cheyney ’90, Palmyra, is director of Lebanon County Planning Department. She previously served in other roles at Lebanon County including zoning officer and assistant director.
Dianne Wright ’90, Lansdale, celebrated 5 years of private practice as the owner of North Penn Physical Therapy, an outpatient physical therapy practice based in Lansdale, Pa.
Melody Herr ’92, Ann Arbor, Mich., is the senior acquiring editor for politics and government as well as program and project manager at the University of Michigan Press. She presented at the University of Arkansas as a candidate for the head of the Office of Scholarly Communications.
Anthony Majewski ’92, Hatboro, is a finalist for the 2015 Escalante-Gradillas Best in Education Prize. He is the principal of Hill-Freeman World Academy in Philadelphia.
Curt Reichwein ’92, Audubon, received the Teacher Excellence Award for 2015-2016. He is currently a technology and engineering education teacher at North Penn High School.
Mary (Taylor) Ressler ’92, Manheim, is a reading specialist in the Hempfield School District. She has won several grants and a research award, including one of the National Council of Teachers of English’s highest awards for 2015. She has also written a book submitted for publication in 2016.
Jean-Paul Benowitz ’93, Harrisburg, published a book, Elizabethtown, discussing the religious, cultural, and political development of Elizabethtown through stories and photos. He is currently a professor of American history and religious studies, director of student transition programs, and assistant director of academic advising at Elizabethtown College.
Luke Lazar ’93, Dillsburg, was appointed to a shareholder of RETTEW, an engineering consulting firm based in Lancaster. He is the director of the safety consulting group with more than 20 years of experience in providing safety education and consulting as well as industrial hygiene services.
Robert Mancini ’93, Hoboken, N.J., won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media-Multiplatform Storytelling at the 2015 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. He is the vice president of digital content for Bravo, and won for the network’s cross-platform experience around its docuseries “The Singles Project.”
John Black ’95, Lancaster, is the principal of Park Elementary School in the Columbia School District.
Korey (Parsons) Cox ’95, Sinking Spring, was a featured teacher in the Reading Eagle newspaper. She teaches kindergarten at Bethel Elementary School in Bethel.
Tammy Leidich ’95, Mount Joy, was promoted to manager of online learning content at TE Connectivity, where she has worked since 2007.
Christen Coscia ’96, Lancaster, co-authored a chapter in the book, Teaching Mindfulness to Kids and Teens. She is a lead teacher at Kinder Associates in Lancaster.
Matthew Bono ’97, Lancaster, is a principal at the Walz Group, an accounting firm in Lancaster. He joined the firm in 2007 and most recently served in a dual role as manager for both the accounting and consulting division and the information technology division.
Kim Graham-Pfeffer ’97, Philadelphia, is the director of financial services at Thomas Jefferson University. She previously held positions in Student Activities as well as manager of Integrated Card Services.
Dr. Jeffrey Lehman ’97, Columbus, Ohio, is senior vice president for strategy and analytics for Citizens Financial.
Bryan Sanguinito ’97, Ephrata, was elected as president of the eastern region on the Pennsylvania State Education Association. He was a former candidate for the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.
Dr. Benjamin Stiles ’97, ‘05M, Strasburg, completed an Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership through Immaculata University. He is a former high school English teacher and currently serves as the career development counselor for the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center System.
Abraham Breslin ’98, Willow Street, is the senior director of labor relations with Rite Aid. He was formally the director of labor relations with Penske Truck Leasing.
Dr. Gary Lewandowski ’98, Holmdel, N.J., published a textbook, Discovering the Science Within, introducing research methodology in a highly effective, thoroughly engaging new way.
Amanda Sims ’98, Stillwater, Okla., was promoted to prayer team pastor with the church online team of Life.Church in Edmond, Okla.
Brenda Bare ’99, Lancaster, is the director of curriculum for Lancaster Mennonite School.
George (Andrew) Meschter ’99, Collegeville, published a book, Gentlemen Gloucester First Philadelphia Calvary, about the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary, a Pennsylvania National Guard unit founded in 1774 and still active today.
Ned Bushong ’99, Lancaster, received the North Museum Board of Directors’ Prize for Excellence in Science Education at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair in Lancaster.
2000s
Mike Chick ’00, Arlington, Va., competed in the 8th season of the NBC television series, American Ninja Warrior. He has been featured in Washingtonian Magazine as a top lawyer in his field.
Lew Martin ’00, New Holland, teaches algebra at Lancaster Mennonite School.
Jaime (Marcus) Zucker ’00, Bensalem, was voted as 2015 Buck’s Happening Mover & Shaker in Bucks County. She is the president and creative director of Sugar Lane Graphics, a visual and digital graphic design company.
Nathan Claycomb ’01, Lancaster, earned his Certified Travel Industry Specialist designation from the American Bus Association. He is currently the business development manager at Sight & Sound Theatres.
Jennifer (Bates) Cole ’01, Cream Ridge, N.J., opened Screamin’ Hill Brewery, the first farm brewery in New Jersey.
Theresa Katalinas ’01, Willow Grove, is director of community relations and marketing for the Horsham and Abington locations of Lee’s Hoagie House by chef Jon Waxman.
David Morris ’01, Middletown, received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Delaware in December 2015. He is currently the vice president for development at Delaware Technical Community College, where he oversees fundraising and alumni relations.
Nikole Hollins ’02, ‘04M, Harrisburg, received a doctoral degree in school psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in May 2016.
Frederick Kerner ’02, Morrisville, was elected president of Morrisville’s Borough Council, a board on which he has served since 2010.
Antoine Wright ’02, Aldan, is a UX designer for the Allegis Group, one of the largest privately held staffing companies in the world.
James Lamb ’03, Reading, is the Pennsylvania State Education Association’s Southern Region President and will serve on the PSEA Board of Directors. He is currently teaching in the Annville-Cleona School District.
Hannah Meeson ’03, Gettysburg, published a novel entitled, Just Whistle, which includes song lyrics from another alumnus, Erick Macek ’02.
Justin Baylor ’04, Windermere, Fla., is the dean at Bay Meadows Elementary School in Orlando, Fla.
Christopher Bourland ’04, King of Prussia, was awarded the Appraisal Institute’s most prestigious designation, Member of Appraisal Institute, which is held by appraisers who advise clients on complex commercial real estate investment decisions and are experienced in the valuation of commercial, industrial, residential and other types of investments. He currently works with the Mid-Atlantic Valuation Group.
Melinda Meyers ’04, Mount Joy, is the community engagement and grants manager of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra.
Bryan Behrenhausen ’05, Chapel Hill, N.C., completed his Ph.D. in communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Robert Rotz (Faculty), King of Prussia, died 10/29/15 at the age of 89. He was a sociology and anthropology professor at Millersville University for more than 20 years and served as chair for the department. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the 81st Infantry Wildcat Division in the Philippines and Japan. (VET)
Esther (Collins) Smith ’34, Holden, Mass., died 12/21/15 at the age of 102. She taught elementary school for 33 years before retiring in 1975.
Paul Brackbill ’36, Greensboro, N.C., died 11/8/15 at the age of 102. He was an accountant for three large companies, retiring from Western Electric Co. headquarters in New York City.
John Ursprung ’38, Savannah, Ga., died 5/27/15 at the age of 98. He was one of the founders of Campus Publishing Company in 1938, which later became the Cooke Publishing Company where he served as owner and CEO. He was a member of the Graphic Arts Association of Philadelphia and Union League of Philadelphia. He was also President of the Philadelphia Graphic Arts Golf Club.
Mark Herr ’39, New Holland, died 11/22/15 at the age of 97. He worked as an executive in the trucking industry for most of his career. He also served as the youngest ever Rotary District #79 governor and was featured on Ripley’s Believe it or Not in 1950 for signing his name 1,474 times in a single financial transaction.
Marian Jones ’45, York, died 10/19/15 at the age of 91. She was an elementary teacher in the Lewisberry Borough School for eight years, then taught second grade in the Canadochly Valley Elementary School of Eastern York School District for 22 years before retiring.
Arthur Reist ’49, Lancaster, died 3/22/16 at the age of 88. He was a social studies teacher for 31 years at Conestoga Valley and worked on his ancestral farm his entire life. He wrote two publications: Tobacco Lore of Lancaster County, Pa. (1974) and Conestoga Wagon – Masterpiece of the Blacksmith (1976).
Barbara (Keener) Shenk ’49, Lancaster, died 5/6/15 at the age of 87. She published several books and hundreds of poems throughout her life. She taught at various Mennonite schools in Lancaster and York.
Du-Can “Duke” Chan ’55, Exton, died 3/2/16 at the age of 83. He was a teacher at the Department of Defense schools in Germany and then a computer technician with Civil Service, Unisys and the State of New Jersey.
H.H. Kramer ’58, Millersville, died 12/21/15 at the age of 84. He taught as a math teacher at Manheim Central Junior High School for 34 years. He also served as principal of the Adult Evening School at Manheim Central. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed as a draftsman at Indiantown Gap and Carlisle Army War College. (VET)
Robert Jones ’61, Lakemont, Ga., died 12/26/15 at the age of 79. He worked with the Secret Service Presidential Protection Unit and for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He retired from the U.S. Treasury Department as a criminal investigator. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. (VET)
Gerard “Jerry” Gehman ’65, Orlando, Fla., died 9/16/14 at the age of 72. He taught at West Deptford High School in New Jersey for many years.
Frances Keller ’65, Lancaster, died 9/19/15 at the age of 71. She was a member of the English Department at J.P. McCaskey High School until retiring in 2006. She had a passion for theater arts and lighting design and developed the concept of the Turn Around Theater, giving students an opportunity to direct one act plays. She volunteered for many years as lighting designer and technician for Actor’s Company of Pennsylvania, Opera Lancaster productions and the Ware Center.
JoAnna Wentling ’65, Glen Mills, died 11/15/15 at the age of 69. She was a long time faculty member of the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Pennsylvania.
Richard Yinger ’65, Lake Worth, Fla., died 1/9/14 at the age of 73. He was professor and chair of the Social Sciences department at Palm Beach Junior College. He received the award for Best Florida Community College Teacher of the Year in 1985 and the National Teaching Excellence Award in 1989. He also enlisted in the Marine Corps for three years. (VET)
Mary “Betsey” (Snyder) Schnetzer ’66, Huron, Ohio, died 2/14/16 at the age of 71. She was a retired first grade teacher in Chatham Township, N.J. She was a very active church member and volunteered her time with many organizations.
Thomas Work Jr. ’66, Gilbertsville, died 2/1/16 at the age of 74. He taught social studies for 30 years at Pottstown High School, where he also coached football. He was a first lieutenant at Fort Knox and in Vietnam, serving in the 1st Division of the U.S. Army and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. (VET)
John Roth ’68, Roseville, Calif., died 7/19/15 at the age of 69. He taught high school physics and then became the district manager for Circuit City for 25 years. He then worked at Toyota of Sacramento until his passing.
Walter Breita ’70, Nanticoke, died 5/11/15 at the age of 69. He was a teacher at West Side Vocational School for 33 years. While at West Side, he served as assistant football coach for two years and head coach for four years. He was also a volunteer firefighter with Hanover Fire Company #4.
Clyde Kennith “Butch” Neal ’74, Lancaster, died 4/29/16, at the age of 69. He was a graduate of the Industrial Arts program and served as equipment manager for the Men’s Athletic Department at MU. A master craftsman, he taught woodworking and electronics at Manheim Township High School for 27 years.
Dale Hess ’76, Goshen, Ind., died 3/1/15 at the age of 60. He worked as the ecological field station director and associate professor in sustainability and environmental education at Goshen College.
Suzanne Howell ’80, Bloomsburg, died 12/19/15 at the age of 57. She worked as a bank teller and volunteered for the Milton YMCA and McEwensville Public Library.
Herbert Witmer ’80, Millersville, died 10/19/15 at the age of 79. He worked as a senior rate analyst for Armstrong World Industries for many years.
Thomas Truscott ’83, Portland, Maine, died 5/15/15 at the age of 56. He was instrumental in starting the club lacrosse team at Millersville. He was an industrial arts teacher in a number of high schools across New England and started Crossroad Youth Outreach Ministry, a Christian organization that mentored incarcerated youth.
Jean (McGovern) Coyne ’84, West Chester, died 4/9/16 at the age of 53. She worked as an accountant for Robert J. Kratz for the last 15 years. She was also active in the West Bradford Youth Association for many years.
Kevin Day ’86, Lansdale, died 3/27/15 at the age of 51. He was the supervisor at the Sellersville Post Office and had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service for almost 20 years. Before this, he was a teacher with the School District of Philadelphia. While attending Millersville, he enjoyed being a WIXQ DJ.
James Hamilton ’93, Harrisburg, died 8/28/15 at the age of 44. He worked at Computer Aid, Inc., a global IT services company for 22 years. He enjoyed reading, riding his Harley, hiking, camping, playing online games, rooting for the New Orleans Saints and spending time with family and friends.
Scott Garrison ’94, Mountville, died 1/5/16 at the age of 45. He worked as a supervisor at Lancaster Mold Inc. in Leola. He enjoyed history and attending Penn State football games.
Amanda Rodgers ’07, East Earl, died 5/18/15 at the age of 30. She was a social work case manager for visually and hearing impaired adults at Schazenbach Consulting in Dillsburg. She loved music, dancing, and being outdoors.
