New registrar, new dean.

Alison Hutchinson

Alison M. Hutchinson is Millersville University’s new registrar. She officially began her new role on May 2.

Hutchinson served as interim registrar at Millersville for more than a year. Prior to her appointment as interim registrar, Hutchinson served the University in various positions since September 2010 including: interim associate registrar; director of records and operations and director of records and registration.

While serving as the interim registrar, Hutchinson has been instrumental in modifying the practice of degree conferral that will lead to more accurate PASSHE reporting and a step towards future performance funding increases.

Additionally, Hutchinson played a key role in a University-wide project to implement a student degree-audit system conversion from DARS to the more user-friendly Degree Works product.

Prior to coming to Millersville, Hutchinson spent five years as the registrar of the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCAD). While there, she collaborated with campus-wide departments to develop a full student information system conversion which included online grading and a classroom management system.

Hutchinson earned a bachelor’s in human development and family studies and a master’s of education in training and development, both from the Pennsylvania State University.

 

New Dean Named

Dr. Michael Jackson, Dean

Dr. Michael Jackson has been named the founding dean of Millersville’s College of Science and Technology.  Jackson was selected after an extensive national search and will begin his new role on July 1, 2015.  Previously, he was chairperson of the Department of Physics at Central Washington University from 2007 – 2013 and interim department chairperson of the Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 2006 – 2007.

He earned a Ph.D. in Physics from New Mexico State University and a bachelor’s from the State University of New York, College at Oswego in physics and mathematics.

Jackson’s service includes four elected terms as Councilor for the Physics and Astronomy Division at the Council on Undergraduate Research, where he has served in several capacities including as member of the Executive Board, Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Division, co-Chair of the Posters on the Hill committee, and co-Chair of the CUR Fellows committee.  He served two elected terms as president of the Washington Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers and an elected term as Chair of the Academic Department Chairs Organization at Central Washington University.

 

Faculty/Staff activities

Dr. M. P. A. Sheaffer, English, was one of the featured participants in the “Poetry at the Players’” program on May 13 at the Players’ Club in New York.  She read works by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats. She was also an alto ringer in the Canterbury Choral Society’s spring concert on May 17 of Franz Schubert’s ”Great Mass in Eb” and Ludwig von Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy” at the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York.

 

 Egghead Winners

The annual Egghead golf tournament was held Tuesday, May 12.

The event, at Crossgates, was sponsored by Millersville APSCUF who supplied the prizes and the food.

The foursome of Drs. Tom Bell, Roger Webster, Chip Schaeffer and Ying Wushanley won the tournament with eight under.  Other prize winners included:

Jim Cosentino (closet to the pin)
