Millersville University Approved to Offer Doctoral Degrees

Millersville University will now offer a Doctor of Educational Leadership (Ed.D.).

At a meeting of the Board of Governors (BOG) today, January 22, Millersville University’s request to offer its first doctoral degree was approved. Classes, for the first offering of a Doctor of Educational Leadership (Ed.D.), are slated to begin in summer 2015.

“Being able to offer doctoral programs is a major component in fulfilling Millersville’s new strategic plan – Our Bold Path,” explained university President, Dr. John Anderson. The Ed.D. is the first of three doctoral programs that we intend to implement within a three year period. Our faculty are hard at work on the next proposed programs for a Doctorate in Social Work and a Doctorate in Nurse Practitioner.”

“The development of this first doctoral program in Education Leadership is a natural extension of our outstanding baccalaureate and master’s programs in education and is a programmatic milestone for the University,” said Dr. Vilas Prabhu, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

“The Ed.D., which will be offered in partnership with Shippensburg University, leverages the strength of Shippensburg’s Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility Program with Millersville University’s existing and growing expertise in cyber-school and online learning environments,” said Dr. Victor DeSantis, dean of the College of Graduate & Professional Studies.

Millersville and Shippensburg are well-regarded for their education programs and are fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, formerly known as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, for their delivery of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs,” continued DeSantis. “And, we’re both recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for our teacher preparation and administrator training programs. This is a solid collaboration that we are excited to launch.”

The Ed.D. is designed to provide rising school district, state level and organizational leaders with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to develop and implement programs that support the Commonwealth’s children in realizing their full academic potential.

“Emphasis will be placed on best practices and research-based inquiry,” explained Dr. Tiffany Wright, one of the lead faculty members for the new program.  “We’ll be focusing on topics such as the impact of poverty on student achievement and the role of technology in reaching larger audiences of students with effective learning strategies.  Candidates will be grounded in rigorous research-based inquiry models to be applied within their own settings, allowing them to serve as advocates for their students, especially the underserved students.”

The Ed.D. program, which can be completed on a part-time basis in four years, will be delivered in an accessible blend of traditional, hybrid, fully-online and field-embedded formats. Most classes will be held at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg. Admission to the program requires a master’s degree and advanced administrative experience. I am currently in the Shippensburg Letter of Eligibility program and I am hoping to transfer some of those credits into this doctoral program. Additionally, I have my masters in educational leadership from Millersville already and I am familiar with the campus as well as some of the faculty.

I am very interested in attending the open houses that will be offered to find out more information.

Thanks,

Melinda ( Mindy) O’Brien

I am interested. Please contact me with further information. I completed my letter of superintendency through Shippensburg.

Millersville is now doctoral institution, but still has a library that closes at 12. Anderson, the path is so bold! Tell us more about your bold plan soon.
