Astronomer Dr. Derrick Pitts spoke at MU.

Dr. Derrick Pitts, the chief astronomer and director of the Fels Planetarium at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and a regular science content expert on shows such as “The Colbert Report” and “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” spoke at the 30th Annual Brossman Foundation and Ronald E. Frisbie Science Lectureship. Pitts presented “The New Universe” in the Clair Performance Hall, located in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center at Millersville University.

Pitts discussed new discoveries that add to the rich diversity of amazing astronomical objects that effectively reveal a “new” universe every few years. The new discoveries also redefine who we are as citizens of the Cosmos.

Dr. Robert Smith, dean of the School of Science & Mathematics, invited the public to attend the lecture with the goal of expanding public interest in contemporary issues in science and mathematics. “By annually hosting this event on our campus, we provide our students and the general public with an opportunity to meet and interact with nationally prominent scientists and mathematicians,” said Smith.

In addition to his appearances on late-night television, Pitts has hosted award-winning astronomy radio programs in Philadelphia for more than two decades and created astronomy television programming for PBS. Pitts has been recognized with numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Science degree from La Salle University. He also serves on the board of trustees for his alma mater, St. Lawrence University.
