The University will honor military veterans with a month full of activities. Scheduled events include a day-long forum and veterans speaking in an MU class to commemorate Veterans Day.

Millersville will also host the upcoming Cost of Freedom Forum, an all-day forum that will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11.The forum will feature informational sessions, a tour of the Veterans Resource Center and a presentation titled “Heart of Gold,” by Dr. Ronald Frankum, professor of history and author of six books on the Vietnam War. Frankum’s presentation will begin at 11:45 a.m. during a ticketed-luncheon in Reighard Multipurpose Room, Student Memorial Center.

Also on the Cost of Freedom Forum’s guest speaker line-up is Dr. Kristine Sudol, a post-traumatic stress disorder clinical team director at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, with her free public lecture, “Women in U.S. History,” at 4 p.m. in Myers Auditorium, McComsey Hall. The keynote address, “The Cost of Freedom,” will be given by Brigadier General (Ret.) Jerry G. Beck Jr., a Millersville alumnus, at 7 p.m. in Lehr Room of Gordinier Hall. The keynote address is free and open to the public.

“Events like the forum not only provide students and the community with opportunities to increase their awareness of salient issues in our nation’s history, but also gives us a moment to evaluate and reflect upon what it means to live in a free society and the sacrifices made by our current student-veterans and past Millersville University alumni-veterans,” said Dr. Jeffrey Wimer, associate professor of wellness and sports science and coordinator of the event.

Three Vietnam War veterans will be guest speakers in a Vietnam War course taught by Millersville’s Dr. Ronald Frankum. The speakers include two Millersville alumni, and the talks will take place on three separate dates. All sessions will be held in Room 132, McComsey Hall.

On Monday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. in Frankum’s class, Jack Yuska, a Millersville alumnus who served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1969, will tell his personal stories of the war and will speak on the 1968 Tet Offensive, one of the largest military campaigns in the Vietnam War.

Later in the semester, on Nov. 17 at 4 p.m., Bob Howe, a former forward air controller, will speak primarily on the air war.

And on Dec. 1 at 4 p.m., Jack Frey, a Millersville Alumnus and retired U.S. Marine, will also talk about the 1968 Tet Offensive.
