Millersville Receives Honorable Mention for Bicycle Friendly Campus

President John Anderson’s passion for bicycle riding has influenced the look of the Millersville University campus. Newly installed bike racks and campus bicycle repair stations have caught the attention of an organization dedicated to promoting bicycle riding. On Oct. 22, the campus received an Honorable Mention from The League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) program.

The BFU program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bike friendly campus for students, staff and visitors. The program evaluates applicants’ efforts to promote bicycling in five primary areas: engineering, encouragement, education, enforcement and evaluation/planning.

“We believe we can do better than an Honorable Mention and we hope to earn a higher-level status. We have four years to do so until The League of American Bicyclists evaluates us again,” said Dr. Daniel Keefer, professor and chair of the wellness and sports sciences department at Millersville.

The Bicycle Advocacy Committee, led by Keefer and Michele Boté, assistant director of Experimental Learning & Career Management, and Dr. Anderson have plans to continue promoting bicycles on campus. “Right now, we are trying to change the behaviors of students and employees. We want to encourage healthier behaviors and educate our students about becoming more sustainable to themselves and the environment,” said Keefer.

As part of Millersville’s initiative to educate students and in honor of Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, demonstrators were at the new “fix-it” bicycle stations to show students how to use them. One station is outside the Student Memorial Center (SMC) Fitness Center and the other is by the front entrance to Lyle Hall. The stations include all of the tools necessary to perform basic repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and gears.

Millersville needs to be more motorcycle friendly now with some designated parking spots

This is great! When I was a student at Millersville, I felt like I was one of only a few cyclists there. I’m also a life member of the League of American Bicyclists — and when I read in their publication about the BFU program, I was not shocked to see that Millersville wasn’t high in the rankings. But my immediate thought — having also read in the Review about Dr. Anderson’s passion for bicycling — was, “I’ll bet he will want to change that!” And I believe that he (and the Bicycle Advocacy Committee) will. Thanks to all who are involved!
