U.S. News Ranks Millersville in Top 100

U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges issued for 2015, ranked Millersville University 87.

U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges issued for 2015, ranked Millersville University 87 in the category of Best Regional Universities – in the North region.  When you remove private institutions from the mix, Millersville ranks in the top 25. The annual ratings were released today, September 9.

“We are quite proud of the fact, that year after year, Millersville ranks in the top 100,” said Brian Hazlett, vice president of enrollment management at Millersville, “However, there are hundreds of rankings and they are only one of many criteria students and their families should consider in choosing a college. A prospective student’s academic and professional ambitions, personal preferences, financial resources and scholastic record, as well as a school’s size, atmosphere and location, should play major roles in determining a college choice.”

Other Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities in this category were ranked as follows: West Chester 65, Slippery Rock 83, and Shippensburg tied with Millersville at 87.  Bloomsburg came in at98, Kutztown 125, East Stroudsburg 133, Edinboro and Mansfield tied at 135. California University of Pa., Cheyney, Clarion and Lock Haven were listed alphabetically in the second tier. Indiana University of Pa. was listed in the second tier of National Universities category because it offers doctoral degrees.

A school’s ranking is based 77.5 percent on a formula that uses objective measures of academic qualities including retention and graduation of students; faculty resources; student selectivity; financial resources; alumni giving; and graduation rate performance, the difference between the proportion of students expected to graduate and the proportion who do.  The remaining 22.5 percent is based on a peer assessment that includes an additional academic reputation survey among high school counselors.  In the peer assessment survey, U.S. News asks the president, provost and dean of admissions at each school to rate the quality of the academic programs for schools in the same ranking category, including their own.

The print edition of the “Best Colleges 2015” guidebook can be purchased online now or on newsstands Sept. 24.
