Starting in the fall of 2014, Millersville University will be offering a unique joint program that is sure to catch the eye of those in the social work or human services field. The program, implemented by professors Karen Rice and Sepi Yalda, is a Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM) joint degree.

Millersville is unique in offering this joint degree. While other colleges and universities around the country offer master’s degrees in either social work or emergency management, the ‘Ville is the only college that offers both as a joint program.

“This is a one-of-a-kind program in the country which allows our graduate students to specialize in these two areas that are critical for those interested in working in pre and post disaster settings,” said Dr. Yalda. “Students completing this joint program will have a unique preparation and training that combines and highlights the strong connection between the two fields of emergency management and social work.”

The idea for the joint degree was initially proposed by Dr. Rice. During a trip to Chile for the emergency management program, Yalda learned more about the worldwide need for joint degrees of this type.  In Chile, she saw firsthand the need for professionals in the field with experience in both emergency management and social work.

“Social workers provide the majority of mental health services in this country and play an integral role in all phases of emergency management,” said Rice. “Having social workers trained in emergency management enhances their skills and knowledge to be optimal agents of change within this specialized area of practice.”

Students who are interested in the joint degree must first apply and be accepted to both the MSW and MSEM programs at Millersville. Once admitted, the full curriculum of the MSW program must be completed in addition to several emergency management courses and field placement in an emergency management setting.

Though the program is still in its infancy, it has already attracted the attention of students.  Three students have enrolled in the joint program before any targeted marketing has taken effect.
