Lacrosse Team Honored for Sportsmanship

Winner of the 2012-13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award

For its action in a time of tragedy, the Millersville women’s lacrosse team has been selected as a winner of the 2012-13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Sportsmanship Award.

The award, now in its fifth year, is given annually to one male and one female student-athlete or team that best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and has demonstrated the values of respect and integrity through a specific action, ideally directed toward an opponent.

The Marauder lacrosse program exemplified these ideals immediately following the tragic bus accident involving the Seton Hill lacrosse program on March 16. En route to a game at Millersville, the bus carrying the Seton Hill team crashed, injuring several team members and killing head coach Kristina Quigley and her unborn son, Jackson. To show their support and to unite the lacrosse community behind the grieving Seton Hill program, the Marauders and head coach Mia Hall organized a fundraiser in honor of Quigley and the team.

Millersville produced crimson and gold wristbands with “onelaxfamily” and “KQ” embroidered across the front. The armbands went on sale just days after the accident and more than $10,000 was generated through nationwide sales efforts. All proceeds were donated to a scholarship fund for Quigley’s young son, Gavin.

Each Millersville player continued to wear the wristbands during each game for the remainder of the season. Many also showed support by wearing crimson and gold socks, headbands or other accessories.

“We are proud of Coach Hall and the members of the women’s lacrosse program for their selfless acts of generosity and support for all those affiliated with the Seton Hill women’s lacrosse program,” said Millersville director of athletics Peg Kauffman. “While we are pleased to be the recipient of this year’s PSAC sportsmanship award, our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the student-athletes, coaches and families at Seton Hill University who were affected by this tragedy.”

The wristbands can still be purchased for $8 at the Millersville Lacrosse website.
