Silence the Hate

The second annual S.L.U.T. (Strong Ladies United Together) Walk takes place on April 18 at 6 p.m.

Millersville University is holding a variety of activities this week for Silencing the Hate Week 2013. As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Silencing the Hate Week, the Empower Peer Educators and the Elsie S. Shenk Wellness and Women’s Center will host their second annual S.L.U.T. (Strong Ladies United Together) Walk on April 18 at 6 p.m. at the Student Memorial Center Promenade.

S.L.U.T. Walk is part of a nationwide educational initiative to raise awareness about violence against women and blaming victims of sexual assault.

On Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. the Biology Club will be showing the film “Temple Grandin,” with a brief opening discussion about autism. “Temple Grandin” is a biopic of Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry. This event will be held in Club deVille.

At 9:15 p.m. the Black Student Union will hold an open discussion on self hate as part of Silencing the Hate Week. This event will be held in the Reighard Multipurpose Room in the Student Memorial Center.

On Friday, April 19 at 4 p.m. students are asked to wear white Silencing the Hate T-shirts (or any other clothing you don’t mind staining) and come break the silence with a color fight hosted by the Graduate Social Work Organization at Millersville University. This event will be held at the Student Memorial Center patio.

At 4:05 p.m. write the hate on your balloon and let go of the hate by releasing the balloon into the air. All materials are biodegradable. This event will be held on George Street.

At 5 p.m. the Silencing the Hate Planning Committee will feature African American transgender athlete Kye Allums as the closing speaker. Allums is a former Trans D-I collegiate basketball player and a current LGBTQXYZ advocate. This event will be held in the Reighard Multipurpose Room in the Student Memorial Center.
