Educator of the Year Recipient

Dr. John Wallace has been selected to receive the second annual Educator of the Year Award.

Dr. John R. Wallace, Millersville University's 2012 Educator of the Year.

Through his scholarly expertise and commitment to student learning, Dr. John Wallace, professor of biology at Millersville University, has been a role model to his students and his fellow faculty since he came to Millersville in 1998. For his dedication to the University, Wallace has been selected to receive the second annual Educator of the Year Award. He will be honored at the undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 12, 2012.

“Dr. Wallace was an outstanding nominee for this award,” said Dr. Laurie Hanich, educator of the year award committee chair. “Dr. Wallace’s commitment to student learning is demonstrated by his constant supervision and collaborative efforts with students on research projects, many resulting in presentations and peer-reviewed publications.”

As a medical and aquatic entomologist, Wallace teaches a variety of courses at Millersville, such as entomology, aquatic biology, ecology and evolution and forensic entomology. He works closely with his students in laboratory settings, studying a wide range of topics and generating important scientific data, which many of his students present at international, national, regional and local scientific conferences. Wallace also advises students on co-ops and internships, as well as serves as the faculty advisor for the Entomology Club at Millersville University.

Dr. Wallace reels in his students with his engaging teaching style!

“Being selected as Educator of the Year is humbling because I know of so many faculty doing amazing things across all disciplines here at Millersville University,” said Wallace. “I believe that we do not sign up for these positions for such accolades; however, these awards validate that we are on the right path in terms of both our own raison d’etre as professors but also in terms of producing well-rounded, critically thinking Millersville University graduates as productive citizens in society.”

His work and passion go beyond Millersville University as well. “My research and service life takes me to all parts of the world on projects such as one that deals with a neglected tropical disease, Buruli Ulcer,” said Wallace. In addition, Wallace is one of 15 Board Certified Forensic Entomologists in North America, a Diplomate with the American Board of Forensic Entomologists and a Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Science.

The Educator of the Year Award recipient must exhibit the following criteria: Involves students actively in the learning process; synthesizes complex concepts and bodies of knowledge into well-communicated material; is approachable to students through fostering an environment of personal and professional concern and committed to what is going on not only within his/her department, but also throughout the University.

The Educator of the Year Award Committee is composed of seven members: Hanich, educational foundations; Dr. Carrie Smith, sociology/anthropology; Dr. Michelle White, academic advising; and Dr. Yuan Zhong, biology, as well as Millersville alum Kathy Brabson and graduate student Candace Williams.

Congrats again dude, there are great educators, there are awesome educators, and then there’s J-Dubbs. 🙂

Congratulations Dr. Wallace! You have been a great mentor to me throughout my education here at Millersville! You are an amazing, fun professor and definitely deserve this award!

Congratulations John!

What an awesome award. I don’t know you well, but I walked into your office to ask a question and you gave me some lengthy academic advising that was very much appreciated, even though you are not my advisor!!

You didn’t seem at all perturbed at the thought of helping me through my concerns, and it made me feel very welcome.

I’ll be taking your Eco/Evo next semester, so I’m looking forward to it!

Congratulations Dr. Wallace! I am so glad that i had the opportunity to take so many classes with you. You made me enjoy instead of fear insects! You deserve this more than anyone!

Congratulations, Dr. Wallace! You have been so helpful to me, especially throughout my riparian restoration project! I am so glad I had the opportunity to be your student, and I hope to continue working with you throughout my career! You have been a great teacher, mentor and friend! Thank you!

Congrats Dr. Wallace,
I loved taking your class. You were always very helpful and nice. A true teacher. Congratulations, you more than deserve this!

Congratulations, Dr. Wallace:
As a student at Millersville University, I knew you were that true teacher, when you replied to our Pequea Creek Watershed Association’s
request for student involvement in our local watershed rehabilitation efforts. I was privileged to meet you when I showed up at the Peace Corps Information Meeting, and found you on the panel. Your positive energy is contagious. You deserve the award.
Sincerely,
Terri M. Bailey

Congratulations Dr Wallace. I know you deserve such an award since I witnessed the good relationship you have with your students and how you impact knowledge into them when I visited Millersville Unversity in the fall of 2010. It is my hope that this award motivates you more to continue your research in buruli ulcer transmission. Bravoooo

I’m not an alum of Millersville nor a student (although my last name is Miller). I am the moderator of the reddit r/NeglectedDiseases page and will be posting this on the page. Congratulations Dr. Wallace and thank you for your contributions to fighting Buruli Ulcer. Hopefully your energetic and innovative teaching style will continue to influence students to help combat NTDs around the globe.

John, Congrats on recognition for being the fantastic, fun teacher you are! So happy for you!

“We’re not worthy!!” [insert our low-to-the-ground
bows as you hold out your hand]

I came to Millersville the same year that John did and I can tell you from the minute John stepped on this campus I knew that he would give his all and more to the community and the students. John, you are a testimony to how passion and commitment impacts all the people you come contact with.

John, Congratulations!!! You epitomize being a true educator and it is always a joy working with you. You are the perfect choice! Kathy
