United Campus Ministries Provides Musical Meditation Series

There will be a musical meditation organ series from February 22-April 22 at the “A-frame Church.”

One of the organs featured during the 250th anniversary.

The 1883 organ, which came from Williamsport and is now at United Campus Ministries on Millersville University’s campus, will provide music for the Organ Music for Lenten Meditation series. Listeners from campus and the surrounding community are invited to hear the musical mediation of the organ on most Wednesdays from February 22-April 4. The series will be held in First United Methodist Church, known locally as the “A-frame Church,” from 12:15-12:45 p.m. However, on Ash Wednesday, February 22, instead of music, there will be a 12:15 p.m. gathering led by Pastor John Laughlin that includes the distribution of ashes.

Guests are invited to either sit in the sanctuary of the church or to bring lunch and sit at the tables in the narthex. There will be pauses in each program for people to come or go from classes or other obligations. These are not concert performances per se; each program will continue without applause and will have visual or written materials that allow for meditation during the music.

The organ, featured in the Organ Historical Society during the 1976 national convention, also played a part in Millersville’s 250th anniversary celebration last year.

The schedule for the organists throughout series includes Dr. Karl E. Moyer, professor of music emeritus, Millersville University, on February 29, March 7 and April 4; Dr. Ann McFarland, professor of music at West Chester University and organist at the host church, on March 21; Cynthia Kahler, organist and director of music ministries at Church of the Apostles, Rohrerstown, and Millersville University alumna, on March 28. Attendees should note that there will not be any meditation on March 14 due to spring break at the University.
