Spring 2012 Biology Colloquium Series

The 2012 Biology Colloquium Series has begun – check out the schedule of lectures!

The Millersville University biology department has announced the schedule for the spring 2012 Biology Colloquium Series. All lectures will be held Wednesdays from 4 – 4:50 p.m. in Caputo Hall room 210 (with the exception of Monday, April 2). Lectures are free and open to students, faculty and staff.

“The purpose of the Biology Colloquium is to bring outstanding scientists to campus to talk and interact with our students,” said Dr. LaVern Whisenton-Davidson, biology. “The biology department strongly believes that these colloquia provide wonderful opportunities and expect that all students who are serious about biology will attend.”

The lecture schedule for the spring 2012 Biology Colloquium Series includes:

February 15: “Teach a Man to Fish,” given by C. Eugene Moore, amateur biologist from Lancaster, Pa.

February 22: “The Impact and Benefits of Genetic Research in the Plain Communities of Lancaster County,” given by Adam Heaps, research technician at the Clinic for Special Children in Lancaster, Pa.

February 29: “Heal the Body with Reflexology,” given by Holly E. Walters, certified reflexology practitioner from Lititz, Pa.

March 7: “Job Interview Talks,” given by the Millersville University Internship and Cooperative Experience Program – biology students.

March 14: Spring Break, no Colloquium

March 28: “Post-Transcriptional Regulation of Meprine Alpha by the RNA Binding Proteins HuR and TTP,” given by Alana Roff, Millersville graduate; master’s in molecular biology from Penn State College of Medicine: Hershey Medical Center.

April 2: “It’s Not You, It’s Biology,” given by Joe Quirk, author of It’s Not You. It’s Biology: The Science of Love, Sex & Relationships. This lecture will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Myers Auditorium, McComsey Hall.

April 11: “Adhesion Junctions Have Broader Functions,” given by Dr. Ramsey A. Foty, associate professor in the department of surgery, University of Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and director of the advanced Microsoft technology specialist program.

April 18: “The Role of Inflammation in Esophageal Cancer,” given by Dr. Douglas B. Stairs, assistant professor in the department of pathology at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey Medical Center.

April 25: “Discovery and Therapeutic Targeting of Lung Cancer Stem Cells,” given by Millersville graduate Dr. Ken Geles, principal research scientist at Pfizer, oncology research unit, East. Pearl River, N.Y.

May 2: “Co-op Talks.”
