Millersville University Library Presents Foreign Film Screening

XXY and Vasermil, the first two screenings in the library’s foreign film series, will be held Feb. 25.

The Millersville University Library presents the first two foreign film screenings of a semester-long foreign film series on February 25. The first film, XXY, will begin at 2 p.m. followed by Vasermil at 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public but is limited to the first 50 attendees. Both films will be shown on campus in Myers Auditorium, McComsey Hall.

Directed by Lucia Puenzo, XXY is an Argentinean film that focuses on the number of choices and life decisions that adolescents face. Alex, 15, was born an intersex child and begins to explore her sexuality after she becomes attracted to a young man. She must search for her own personal identity as both families involved are forced to face their worst fears.

Vasermil, a film from Israel, tells the story of three teenagers from separate marginalized communities that pin their hopes on soccer as a way out. Shlomi, Adiel and Dima are recruited to take part in the Beersheba Youth Championship. Success at this tournament means getting noticed by scouts of the local soccer empire, but they must first overcome their own differences and play as a team.

The Millersville University Library has been offering these free foreign film screenings for a year through its subscription to “Film Movement.” Subscribers to this club receive an award-winning film on DVD before it is released to theaters and the general public.

“The library receives one film each month, along with screening rights for a public performance for up to 50 people,” explained Erin Dorney, outreach librarian. The films are then added to the library collection in Gerhart Hall so students, faculty and staff can borrow them.
