John Emswiler

Q: Where are you from?

A: I was born in Lebanon, Pa., but my family moved to Lancaster when I was very young.

Q: How long have you been working at Millersville University?

A: I started August 24, 1986. This will be my 25th year.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Millersville?

A: My favorite thing about working at Millersville is interacting with the students, coaches, faculty, staff and fans.

Q: We know you were in an accident a few years back. What happened and when?

A: I was riding a bicycle and swerved to avoid a car in February of 2006. I was not wearing a helmet. A hard lesson learned: I would not think of getting on my bike today without my helmet.

Q: How long did you stop working?

A: I returned to work in August of 2006. I was only off for about six months to do extensive speech, occupational and physical therapy.

Q: What is the most gratifying part of your job?

A: The most gratifying part of my job is seeing the athletes work hard and build great confidence and maturity from freshman to senior year. I enjoy seeing the pride they have in participating in Millersville University athletics; no matter if they win or lose, if you give it your best, you can always be proud.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of your work?

A: My favorite thing to do is to get on my bike and ride around Lancaster County. I love to ride out on route 999 and ride along the river.

Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?

A: My greatest accomplishment is being able to return to work after my accident and continuing in my daily activities, which we did not think would be possible when I had my accident, and being able to do simplest things that most people take for granted.

Q: Finish this sentence: “My life would not be complete without…”

A: My life would not be complete without my faith, my wife, my family and my Millersville University family and friends who have helped me through so much.

Emsy is a walking (running), talking miracle!! He continues to baffle his medical team, not only from his accident, but also from his recent heart surgery. He is indeed an Iron Man!! Emsy knows one speed…WIDE OPEN!!!! He is an example of MARAUDER PRIDE!!!

John from day one you treated me as though I’ve been here for years, and that my friend I will never forget! You are a gentleman and an inspiration to many of us. God Bless you and the family always! 🙂 – CISCO.

Emsy is someone who definitely makes our university special. We are blessed to have him on our staff. He and Sue provide an example of strength and courage to our students.

John is, indeed, one of those special people who, in turn, make Millersville special. It just wouldn’t be as good without him. His pleasant greeting, infectious smile, and unflinching dependability even to me as a faculty member who frequented Pucillo Gym were among the things I most missed when I retired.

John (and Susan) – you are amazing! You are two of the strongest & most positive people I’ve met during my 36 years @ MU.
