Faculty and Staff Activities

Dr. Marco Antolin, foreign languages, gave two invited lectures on Spanish-American poetry: “Efectos literarios de la traducción de César Vallejo en los Estados Unidos,” at the X International Congress of Hispanic Literature in San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 2-5; and “Memoria, simbología y fragmentación en la poesía de Julia Piera” at the XXXI International congress of ALDEEU (Spanish Professionals in America) in Ithaca, N.Y., on June 1-4. He recently had his article “El valor de la autenticidad y la virtud de la paciencia: La presencia de Antonio Machado en la poesía de Philip Levine” published by Crítica Hispánica.

Dr. Jean Boal, biology, participated in an international conference titled “Behavior 2011,” a joint conference of the Animal Behavior Society and the International Ethological Conference, held in Bloomington, Ind., July 25-30. She was a co-convenor of a symposium titled, “Perinatal Influences on Behavior,” a co-author of a paper titled, “Prenatal embryonic learning: Evidence from the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis” and presenter of a poster co-authored by Robert Walderop ’10M titled, “Evidence for Sleep in the Common Cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.”

Dr. Ximena Catepillán, mathematics, presented the talk “Culture, Science and Mathematics in the Pre-Columbian Americas” during the First Year Seminar/First Year Experience Mathematics Courses session at the Mathematical Association of America MathFest 2011 Conference. The national conference was held August 4-6 in Lexington, Ky. In addition, Catepillán co-organized the session “The History of Mathematics & its Uses in the Classroom” at the same conference.

Dr. Minor Redmond, academic services, recently received his doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in administration and leadership studies.

Congratulations

To Dr. Elizabeth Sell, mathematics, and her husband Devin Sell, who had a baby boy on July 4 – Ronan J. Sell.

Retired

Jean Bradel, music emerita, and her students performed both at the “Four Corners Festival” at Millersville Univeristy on July 8 and at Lancashire Hall in Lancaster on August 10. The vocalists were invited to perform at Lancashire Hall by Millersville graduate and activities director, Renee Heiser Bevac ‘07.
