Family and friends are invited to attend the fall 2010 commencement ceremony for the 473 baccalaureate degree candidates, Sunday, Dec. 19, at Millersville. The commencement ceremony will be held in Pucillo Gymnasium at 2 p.m., and features Dr. Sylvia Shellenberger ’71, ‘74M, as the commencement speaker.
Shellenberger is a psychologist and professor of family medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. She is guest faculty at a number of institutions including Baylor University in Texas, Favaloro University in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Perú.
Honorary degrees will be presented at the ceremony to Dr. Charles and Patricia Robertson. When Charles retired from the DuPont Corporation, the Robertsons, along with two colleagues, founded NanoDrop Technologies, Inc. (now a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific), in Wilmington, Del. He served as the company’s chief technology officer and the primary inventor of the unique NanoDrop products. Patricia served as the company’s director of finance and director of human resources before retiring in 2008.
At Millersville, the couple supports science education and research in a multitude of ways. These include scholarships for students in both physics and biology, funding for student and faculty research projects and internship opportunities for summer biology field experiences including the Marine Science Consortium at Wallops Island. They have also gifted the University with cutting-edge scientific equipment that is used in biotechnology research.
