New Director, CDRE and Coordinator, MSEM at MU

Dr. Sepideh Yalda, meteorology, has recently been appointed to a three-year term as director of the Center for Disaster Research and Education (CDRE) and coordinator of the Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM) Program.

Yalda received her bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in atmospheric science from St. Louis University and joined the Millersville University faculty in 1997. She is currently professor of meteorology in the Department of Earth Sciences.

She has been the recipient of a number of National Science Foundation (NSF) grants and has served as chair or member of several boards and committees of professional organizations including the American Meteorological Society, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. She has participated in the development of the UCAR strategic plan, has served on several review panels for the NSF and was selected as a member of the United States Delegation to the World Meteorological Organization.

In addition, Yalda actively serves as an invited member on a number of advisory panels including the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training and the National Environmental Education Foundation.

The mission of the CDRE is to provide multidisciplinary education, research and internship opportunities for students and to also play a role in the education and workforce development of the next generation. The CDRE has been associated with a number of educational and research projects funded by the NSF, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and other academic research centers.

The MSEM degree, which is offered fully online, was developed in response to a nationwide need identified by FEMA for well-trained individuals to plan and coordinate emergency management efforts. Graduates are prepared to serve in a variety of positions in the emergency management field and to attain certified emergency manager status.
