Dr. Ralph Anttonen, academic and student development, and Dr. Michelle White, academic advising, presented a pre-conference workshop, “No Budget, No Problem: Let’s Build an Exploratory (Undecided) Program” at the National Meeting of the National Academic and Advising Association ( NACADA), held in Orlando, Fla., October 3-6. They also presented a concurrent session, “YouTube Advising FAQ’s: Informative and Entertaining,” which had more than 100 participants. Anttonen also began his two year term as the National Chair of the Faculty Commission of NACADA.

Dr. Behnam Nakhai, business administration, had his refereed article titled “Six-Sigma for Services: A Service Quality Framework,” co-authored with Dr. Joao S. Neves of the College of the New Jersey, accepted for publication in the International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management.

Dr. Daniel O’Neill, counseling & human development, presented a poster at the Department of Education’s annual meeting on Alcohol, Drugs and Violence in Higher Education in National Harbor, Md., October 18-20. The poster “Choices: Engaging Students in a Conversation about Alcohol at Orientation,” presented Millersville’s CHOICES Orientation workshops for new students led by faculty, staff and students to assist freshmen in understanding alcohol and its risks and making positive personal decisions.

Dr. Gordon M. Nesbitt, wellness and sport sciences, served as guest editor of the “Assessment Special Section” in the October issue of the NIRSA Journal. The journal is put out by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. Nesbitt also published “An Introduction to the Assessment Special Section” in the same issue.

Timothy Shea, English, chaired a panel presentation of Millersville undergraduate and graduate students at the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts at State College, Pa., October 22. Their presentation “Writing Beside Them: Preservice Teachers Learn about Writing Pedagogy from Adolescent Writers” is drawn from the case studies they developed in the class, “Seminar in Teaching Writing.”

Dr. M. P. A. Sheaffer, English, gave two invited lectures in Vienna, Austria, over fall break; the first to Christ Church Anglican on the subject of “The New Vienna Engineered Through the Genius of Otto Wagner” and the second to the American Women’s Association of Vienna on “The Genius of Otto Wagner’s Foresight in the Makeover of the Imperial Capital in the Late 19th-early 20th Centuries.” In addition, two of her poems, “Yangtze Gorges” and “Campo Santo, Pisa” were recently published in Riverwind 30.

Dr. Todd D. Sikora, earth sciences, was the featured scientist at the North Museum of Natural History & Science’s Founders Day, which was held October 9. Together with meteorology seniors Joseph Moore and Erica Dolinar, Sikora provided hands-on demonstrations and tutorials focused on thunderstorms and tornadoes. In addition, Sikora, Dr. Charles Scharnberger, retired earth sciences professor and Eric Hörst, earth sciences, each recently gave presentations in support of Heritage and Horizons Adult Learning. Scharnberger’s presentations, “The Really Big Ones,” and “When Mountains Blow Their Tops,” were held September 21 and September 28, respectively. Sikora’s presentation, “They’re Called Supercells for a Reason” was held October 5. Hörst’s presentation, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” was held October 19.

Retired:

Dr. Dennis Denenberg, professor emeritus, elementary and early childhood, continues to present keynote addresses to conferences and conventions for corporate, teacher and parent groups. Denenberg recently gave, or has coming up, a variety of “Teaching American History” (TAH) and Hooray for Heroes presentations. Oct. 20-22 – Shreveport, La., five separate appearances, plus meetings with students; Oct. 28-29 – Cleveland County, N.C., a TAH presentation; Nov. 1 – Webb City, Mo., TAH presentation and a keynote address; Nov. 5 – Fresno, Calif., TAH; Nov. 6 – Reno, Nev., keynote presentation; Nov.15 – Lawton, Okla., TAH; Nov.20 – Charleston, W.V., a keynote and full day workshop; Dec. 9 – Shelbyville, Ky., keynote and a full day workshop and Dec.10-11 – Manatee, Fla., TAH.

Troy Isaak, retired professor from educational foundations, will be having a Trio CD Release Party November 11, from 7 – 10 p.m. at The Pressroom, 26 W King St., Lancaster, Pa. The event will feature Bruce Campbell on bass, Dave Young on drums and Troy Isaak on piano. Proceeds from CD sales will benefit the Lancaster Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Gordon Rowe, retiree from Millersville and a Lt. Col., recently went to Chicago to address the reunion of the Royal Lao Air Force. During the Vietnam War, Rowe was one of a few USAF pilots who were assigned to a secret mission to train Laotian pilots. He flew missions in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.
