Materials Processing & Typography: Learning by Doing

In this Learning by Doing activity, we explored how different products are made and what their materials and processes and how they can be fabricated. Our technical focus was on how laser cutting and engravings works and practicing how to measure material thickness with calipers. We also learned how the X, Y, and Z coordinates can affect the laser artwork. Measuring a thickness with calipers was new to me and was a key part of setting up our project correctly. During the hands-on portion, I also used Adobe Illustrator for the first time to design a personalized keychain. Then, follow the steps on the worksheet to complete the assignment. Overall, this helped me understand new skillsets that I had never done. It also gave me a chance to experience tools used in manufacturing. It gives to feel of real-world scenarios to show one way of creating a product.
