Safety Engineering – Learning by Doing

In this Learning by Doing safety engineering activity, we explored the fundamental components of safety. Instead of just reading about safety concepts, we arrived for class and were presented with a group activity. This concept helped establish the use of PPE, look out for signs, and be aware of your surroundings before just walking in. We learned that some places might be dangerous without proper PPE and information. As we continued in class, we were presented with the chance to be in a mock environment. This was the start of the activity to get into groups and create a mechanism to grab the “toxic” substance without getting too close to the hazard zone. In our groups, we created a device that would control the “toxic” substance and be safe. This helped us analyze and expand our creativity with the limited available resources. We slowed down, thought the problem through, and considered the possibilities of failing. I liked these types of projects because you get to see others’ strengths and learn with them together. As well as the scenario being in a way, realistic. Overall, gives you the background knowledge just to be safe anywhere you go.
