Electrical Circuits: Learning by Doing

In this Learning by Doing Electronics activity, we explored the basic components of an electrical circuit. A simple circuit includes 3 essential parts: a power source, a conductor, and a load, or in our case, an LED light. This simple circuit converts energy to power the lightbulb. We learned what symbols mean in a diagram for the circuit drawing. This is how the plans would look to identify it. We worked in teams to understand the light bulbs and power a simple circuit with materials at hand. We all collectively identified conductors and non-conductors to find ways to get power to the LED. We then explored switches and how they can alter the conductor path. This hands-on activity set us up for our own chance to try it alone. We created a decoration to create a switch and path for this simple circuit. This was a challenging project for me when it came to having a lot of patience and thinking things through. This experience made the concepts of thinking creatively, drawing a diagram, and executing the design. Although it was tough, it gave me the confidence to understand the concept a little more.
