On January 3, 2026, Dr Xun Pan, coordinator of Keyboard at the Tell School of Music, Millersville University, performed with the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble in a New Year chamber music concert at Qintai Concert Hall. This event served as a prominent opening for Wuhan’s 2026 concert season.
The programme featured four internationally active musicians and focused on the piano quartet repertoire. Dr. Pan was joined by Swiss violinist Simon Maurer, French violist Agnès Maurer, and American cellist Dr. Julian Langford. Performing together as the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, the artists presented a programme centred on major works for piano and strings.
The concert began with Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478, a composition instrumental in establishing the piano quartet as a chamber music genre. The programme proceeded with Brahms’s Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60, a nineteenth-century work recognized for its expanded scale and expressive depth. After intermission, the ensemble performed Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47, a central piece in the repertoire that exemplifies a mature Romantic approach to chamber music. Collectively, these works illustrated the historical evolution of the piano quartet from the Classical era to early Romanticism.
