October brings several exciting projects for composer and performer Rusty Banks, each highlighting his inventive and wide-ranging musical interests.

On October 15, Rusty presents Slow Burn at York College of Pennsylvania as part of the Cultural Series. The piece, written for guitar and interactive spatialized electronics, blends post-minimalist techniques with the freedom of jazz improvisation. It’s an immersive work that invites listeners to experience sound moving through space in real time. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Demeester Auditorium, Wolf Hall.

Later in the month, violist Kimberly Sparr’s performance video of Rusty’s Liquid Fire—for electric viola and video—will be featured in the Birmingham Art Music Alliance’s 30th Anniversary Virtual Concert Series. The video appears in the second episode, streaming October 24 on BAMA’s YouTube channel.

To close the month, Rusty travels to Nebraska to perform with the Nebraska Chamber Players in Blaues Gras by P.D.Q. Bach, the “only forgotten son” of the Bach family. This playful Bluegrass Cantata promises a good dose of humor—and plenty of “picking and grinning.”
