Matthew Benner (’06) serves as the Director of Fine and Performing Arts for Beaufort County School District in Beaufort, South Carolina. His career has included roles as Director of Bands at Beaufort High School and as an instrumental music educator in several elementary and high schools with Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland. Beyond the classroom, he has been active in his local communities, founding and conducting the Hunt Valley Wind Ensemble, performing with community organizations, and offering guidance and expertise to secondary school band directors.
A published conductor, Matthew has been invited to serve as a clinician at district, regional, and national events, where he has shared his knowledge and passion for music with students and educators alike.
Reflecting on his time at Millersville University, Matthew credits the music program with preparing him thoroughly for his career. “Millersville University’s music program prepared me thoroughly by developing a superior level of musicianship through classes I took, performing ensembles I participated in, and professors who mentored me toward maturity. Throughout my career, I have been well-prepared to tackle any challenge, regardless of grade level or discipline (band, orchestra, vocal, general). The skills I developed as a Marauder have served me in many different capacities and set me on the path to be a leader in the arts community.”
