Dr. Jennifer Jester, professor of music industry and live audio at Millersville University’s Tell School of Music, is a contributing author to the forthcoming Modern Band Handbook, to be released by Oxford University Press on August 29, 2025.
The Modern Band Handbook is a first-of-its-kind resource designed to equip educators with the philosophy, pedagogy, and practical strategies for integrating popular music, improvisation, and collaborative learning into classrooms. The book features chapters from leading voices in the field of music education, reflecting more than four years of research, writing, and collaboration.
Dr. Jester’s contribution draws on her expertise in live audio engineering, commercial band coaching, and modern band pedagogy. Her chapter emphasizes innovative strategies to empower student creativity while connecting classroom learning with real-world music industry practices.
“This book represents a transformative step forward in music education,” said Dr. Jester. “Modern band invites students to bring their own voices, experiences, and favorite music into the classroom — creating joyful, relevant, and inclusive opportunities to make music together.”
Bryan Powell, editor of the Modern Band Handbook, highlighted the significance of the project:
“It’s been surreal to see this vision come to life after more than four years. These contributions ensure that this book will inspire and guide the next generation of music teachers.”
The Modern Band Handbook will be available directly through Oxford University Press.
