Tehya Walters is a senior majoring in Music Education and Flute Performance. She served as president of the Flute Association at Millersville, where she secured grants and funding for the annual Tell School of Music Flute Day and introduced initiatives to expand its outreach to younger flutists. In addition, she worked as a tutor during the 2023-2024 academic year and was a marching band section leader, guiding both non-music majors and her peers to support their musical growth in various settings.
As a McNairy Library Research Fellow, Tehya completed two research projects examining how music video games influence musical abilities. Her research explores how learners of all ages engage with informal music education through gaming. She presented her findings at the Made in Millersville Conference and represented the university in Washington, D.C., where she advocated for inclusive music education and emphasized its importance to the secretaries of several Pennsylvania legislators.
Academically, Tehya is on track to graduate summa cum laude in spring 2024. She has been awarded the 2025 Presser Foundation Award in recognition of her musicianship, academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to fostering community.
