Sydney Rauchut, a dual major in Music Industry and Music Education, participated in a work-study program at the international Iceland Airwaves music festival this fall. “I remember thinking this was an amazing opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Sydney recalls. “It would give me valuable experience for my Music Industry and Music Education degrees.” Eleven students selected for this program worked behind the scenes at the festival, contributing to live audio production, stage management, and floor operations.
Sydney’s experience in Iceland was about much more than the festival itself. It became a reflection of her dual passions and an exploration of how music shapes cultures. She believes that “this trip gave me a broader perspective on music in a foreign country.”
From observing Icelandic children learning English through music to witnessing the central role live performances play in Reykjavík’s culture, Sydney saw the power of music as both an educational tool and a societal cornerstone. “Icelandic artists, the opera house, local restaurants hosting live music nightly—it was all inspiring,” she says.
From an industry perspective, Sydney gained hands-on knowledge about live audio, stage management, and collaboration. “Traveling abroad expanded my horizons as a musician, educator, and entrepreneur,” she reflects.
Sydney’s time in Iceland reinforced her belief in pursuing a multifaceted career that blends music education and industry. “Careers are evolving, and I want mine to reflect my diverse passions,” she says. “This trip showed me how interconnected these fields are and how much I can learn by stepping outside my comfort zone.”
