My Education Guru

Hello, my name is Mrs. Stone. I am a senior at Millersville University. I have been working towards my bachelors degree for years now. I have observed in classrooms and even used to work in the before and after school program at the YMCA. I have even helped out with vacation bible school at my church and I have baby sat since I was 12 years old. Today, I will be telling you about my education gurus. This blog post will explain who they are and why I chose them.

So, first lets answer the question as to what is an education guru? An education guru is a person that you look up to and admire. It is a person you believe in and would trust for educational information. An educational guru is also somebody you can turn to for help.

Can you have more than one education guru? The answer is, Yes you can! I have a few teachers that I look up to and also a philosopher that I like as well. The teachers I look up to are Ann Stone, William Stone and Ann Raffensberger. The philosopher I admire is Friedrich Froebel.

I chose Ann Stone as one of my guru’s because the children in her high school classes loved her. They listened to her lessons, the students were very active, and they taught her things as well. I liked that Ann would listen to her students’ thoughts, needs and concerns. She even went above and beyond outside the classroom. I know she attended a few graduation ceremonies for college of her former students. I also know that one of her DECA students’ fashion shows that she put on for a benefit went on to win the National competition.

I choose William Stone because again the students in his classroom loved him. He explained to his students how it was in his classroom and in the real world. The high school students appreciated his honesty with them. I know he gave feedback on his assignments to help his students for the future. He also helped out with being a chaperone for field trips and school functions. He was active, not only in the classroom, but out of the classroom as well. He was in charge of Diversified Occupations. This is where he helped high school students get and maintain a job while still in school. He wrote recommendation letters for some of his students even after high school, so that they could get a job, or get into college or a university.

I choose Ann Raffensberger because she is amazing with her Kindergarten students. The students love her and even when they are in 5th grade, they still come and visit her. She has supported me in any way she can. She helped me with observation hours and also hands on experience with her students. I got to see how lesson plans look, what all it takes to set up a classroom and what all it takes to close the classroom for summer. She has such kindness, patience, and love for all of her students. She even has tutored some students over school breaks to help them get caught up to where they should be.

The reason that I feel that Friedrich Froebel is one of my educational gurus is because I like his practices and he is known as the father of kindergarten. I really like the idea of play based learning and feel that this should be something that takes place in the classroom.

The reason that play based learning should be going on in the classroom is because it is a great way for hands on learners to learn and it’s fun for the children. I like the idea of using play based learning in the classroom so the students are not just sitting in their seats with paper and pencil. I feel that it is letting children be children and they get to be interested in what they want to learn.

Some may ask, “What is play based learning?” Well, play based learning is exactly how it sounds. This means the child plays freely and learns from it. So, it could be a game, toys, or just another child. If you think about it, your child learns a lot from play. For example, my niece likes to play with puzzles and Barbie’s. I fully encourage this because not only is this something that pulls her away from electronics, but she is learning something from playing. She is learning matching, problem solving, grooming habits, social skills and so much more.

So if you get anything from this post, please keep an open mind and have as many educational gurus as you please. The more you have the more you will learn and grow as an individual.

Until Next Time,
Mrs. Stone
