Title: Non-Verbal Norm Violation Experiments

Abstract: This will be a panel of students presenting the results of their individual non-verbal norm violation experiments. As an assignment for the class, we were asked to intentionally violate a non-verbal norm and record strangers; reactions. In our research, we found a wide range of reactions from people depending upon the norm that we violated. The panel presentation will begin with a discussion of what a non-verbal norm is, where they come from, and why they are important. After this, we will each explain what we did for our norm violation, the reactions we received from others, and the ways in which our behavior was related to the nonverbal research.

Title: Who/What Muted Them?: An Examination of Muteness of Male Victims within Sexual Assault

Abstract: This paper discusses the possible causes of why men are muted as victims in relation to sexual assault. By examining three factors, the social services provided to sexual assault victims, the legal system, the social constructions that lead to us believing certain things about both sexes that create stigmas, and our overall idea of what a typical victim/criminal looks like. It also explains what the muted group theory is and how it is relevant to this real life situation.
