Before completing our electronics assignment, I knew a little bit about electronic circuits. In my high school physics class, we did a unit learning all about electricity and how to make our own circuits. It was different than what we did in our learning by doing class as we were given wires, light bulbs, and switches. We didn’t have to make our own switches with the materials given to us. We instead had to make different light bulbs light up through different circuits and switches.
Overall, I really enjoyed making our own decorations. I loved being able to come up with an idea/concept and test it to see if it worked. I ended up trying two different methods to make my light bulb turn on and off. The first way I did it was not work, so I went back to the drawing board and came up with a new idea. The second idea I came up with worked pretty well. I will say I wish I had more time because I would have loved to improve my second concept even more as it was infrequent on it lighting up. I had to have the copper wire placed perfectly on the battery in order for my decoration to light up.
I found that being able to have the objects in front of me and just mess around with them was the best way of me learning. I liked the group aspect as we could bounce ideas off of each other.
Through this assignment, the main thing I learned was that there are so many ways to get the same outcome. When we were trying to make our own switches, I found it very interesting how people came up with very different and creative ideas. Some were simpler than others, but they all came up with the same outcome.
