This activity was centered around safety and risk prevention using the materials provided to us. We were tasked with lifting a small vessel containing a “toxic substance” that was to be dumped into a “safe container” so that the toxic material doesn’t spill or get out. We were given a few select materials like wooden dowels, rubber bands, string, etc. We then used those materials to construct a device that could safely pick up the toxic cup, dump the toxic substance into the safe container, and then remove the cup. The object of the project was to not touch the toxic material, because that would disqualify us. We also needed to stay a certain distance away from the safety cup to make sure we didn’t get “contaminated.” Overall, I really enjoyed this project. The goal was to enforce ideas of creativity, curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving, and I’d say we met that goal.
