This activity was made up of two parts. The first is a 1000-word essay on a topic of our choice related to construction. The second part is a construction design challenge. Starting with the essay, I decided to cover the topic of skyscrapers, their history, their impact, and their story. We were encouraged to explore all elements of the construction field, and we did lots of research. As a class we deepened our understanding of the world around us and how it was built. From skyscrapers to software, humans are innovative and curious, always striving for a deeper understanding of the world around us, and this project encouraged us to explore that idea through our research and the essay assignment. I learned a lot about architecture and the history of man’s pursuit of the clouds. The construction challenge was very interesting as well. We were tasked with using a singular piece of paper to hold a two-liter bottle from two hooks. This forced us to get crafty and come up with unique ways of folding and configuring our piece of paper to achieve two goals. First, keep the bottle from dropping, and secondly, use the least amount of material possible. Whoever managed to support the bottle with the least amount of material was the winner. This activity was intended to create an environment of innovation and problem-solving, which I found helpful in the learning process. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this activity.
