Lettuce with a come from behind surprise!

So this net photo was taken just a few days ago on 4/2/14, and I have to say I never would have guessed such a dramatic change could occur on the lettuce side of the float! That’s not to say our spinach is slacking though. Our spinach in clay is still coming on strong and healthy looking. But, look at that lettuce in the Rockwool, if that isn’t the definition of growth spurt, then I don’t know what else to call it.

You seem to have growth in all of your cups and you should have something to harvest by the end of the semester.

  36. Do you think that the different types of planting material has mad a difference as far as plant growth?

  37. I’ll try to do my best to hit on a couple of the points you guys are bringing up the best I can.
-Clay Medium:I’ll be honest, I thought the clay was going to be the “black horse” pick of our 3 mediums. But, as Jeff said it turned out to be the easiest to work with for transplanting. I actually picked up the foam board today to look at the root system, and the clay roots were huge. (I’ll try to get pics up Wednesday) I’m wondering if the other mediums were too dense. The coir was so solid, I’m afraid maybe the roots never had a chance to expand.
-Light: I was very concerned about light sense the very beginning. The biggest problem I had was that our system is placed on the end cap of moving light. The lettuce row is on the side closest to the edge which means it has the least amount of light passing over it. Up until recently I considered spinning the board 180 degrees, but after the last week, and seeing that lettuce is starting to bypass spinach, makes me think it’s fine as it is.
-Algae: I just checked it today, that’s part of why I picked up the foam to see the roots, I was also checking for algae. To be blunt, it looked fine, which makes me wonder why the other group with the same style as my system has had problems. I know we have different light, and they used perlite, while we didn’t choose that as a medium.
“Spindly”: This problem needs to be looked into, the best guess I have at this point, is my root system. I base this idea on my largest lettuce plant, I fear it might be top heavy, while the roots can’t even be seen coming out the bottom.

  38. Looking at you design which is really good and working well. Do you think the fact that that plants are at a larger distance has helped them grow? Or would you have liked the light closer to your plants?

  39. Have you done any research on what causes plants to be so “spindly”? By that, I mean they seem weak and lacking strength to hold up well.

  40. This message is being posted on behalf of RACHEL TETER. (Rachel cannot post directly due to some log in issues.)

My group and I are also using the clay and by the looks of it you have on clay cup with a lot of luck. Have you had any trouble with algae yet? I was curious since your plants just float on the nutrient rich water and don’t have time to drain.

  41. I don’t know much about the differences between the media, but I have to say that perlite has been a pretty good media. Even though our system had problems, our plants were able to grow off the little water and nutrients they received.

  42. It has been interesting to see how the plants react to different grow media. The hydro-clay is great for getting nutrients to move around but it doesn’t seem to support the plants as well because the individual spheres don’t stick together. It’s amazing to see how well your plants have been growing using the simplest type of system. Sometimes the simplest route is the best!
