Safety Engineering Controls: Learning By Doing
For this activity we had to think like an engineer and create a safe transport mechanism to move a toxic substance, which in this case would be popcorn, to another container that was located on a small table. The mechanism had to be made with the materials that were given to us. The challenge of this project was that we could not touch the contaminated area and if we did, we would fail. The class was divided into 6 different teams and each one had 30 minutes to make 3 different solutions. After the time had passed and you had your mechanisms, you had to notify the teacher and choose a mechanism to show the class. In the video below you can see the mechanism that my group created, in which we only used a rope and a ruler. The plan was to make a knot in the center to place the toxic container and two people had to hold on to each side while a third used a ruler to turn the container. In the end, our solution worked, and we managed to transport the toxic substance safely.
