Fall Semester

I’m planing for my fall semester, improve all the strategies that i learned in my summer semester. My strategies taking notes using the Cornell method which i have to write the questions before reading and answered them after i done with my reading, which helped me during my summer classes in PSSI.

For my reading strategies, i learned that i have, to go to the end, read the final summary on the chapter, write notes, in your own words, read for big ideas and key terms, and read teach what i have learned to someone else. Also other method is write question and look for, who, where, what and when. I think that all of the strategies that i learned are now my habits.

Note-taking strategies

In some of my classes, i have been practice some new strategies. As we know  there are different types of note-taking, such as: Visual Note-taking, Note-taking While Reading, Cornell Method and Concept Mapping and i will show how i used those in one of my classes this summer.

In my Anthropology class with Dr. Garcia, i implemented some techniques; which as helped me in my first college semester. Everyday my Anthropology professor give us, homework in which we have to take notes, for take a quiz the next day. The Cornell Method, which you elaborate ideas and compared sentences, living the key points apart.

The Cornell Method had helped me, to get better grades, because the good note taking that i learned with this method. When i labeled and discovered the main points and i could memorized the topic very well.

My new reading strategies

I discovered how implement strategies when im reading and because that i have a better understanding in my readings. Some of my strategies are: Go to the end, read the final summary on the chapter, write notes, in your own words, read for big ideas and key terms, and read teach what i have learned to someone else.

These strategies help me to learn better and easily about a topic and a reading. I implemented some of them and they didn’t work for me; like the use of who, what, when, how, compare and describe, it confused me somethings and i decided to not do it. Go to the questions and summary at the end and it helped me because when i started reading from the beginning, i already knew what the book was a about.

i would like to keep using the survive, write notes in my own words and read for big ideas, teach other people had help me a lot because when i did it, i started to  remember what i learned before.

I can make my new reading strategies my learning habits, using all of them each time that i have to read, i will know when i reached it because i will do it without know because that will become something that i do always. teaching others because when a person teach other the percentage that we have to learn is bigger that when a person learn by themselves.

Moving to the University

My name is Ismabel Lizardo Carrasco and im a currently PSSI student, which is a program at Millersville University, PSSI is focused on academic, community and interpersonal skill development in a highly structured and highly supportive environment. I want to shared with you some of my experience as a student in America who didn’t know how speak English.

I  moved to USA in September of 2015 from the Dominican Republic, (almost 3 years ago), i didn’t know how to speak any English and i can say that all the i know i learned by myself, you can learn everything that you want if you work hard and give your best and everything that you do, the first day in my new high school in Reading Pennsylvania i was lost, i couldn’t understand anything and didn’t know anybody, because i arrived in September the school was already started, while everybody were hanging out with their friends, i was alone eating lunch.

I stared learning English in my ESL class which was 2 periods, like everybody every time that i had to speak in front of my class, i felt how my leg were shaking, but i was always positive, because i wanted learn English or at lest understand when someone tell me something, always believe in myself and looked me at the mirror and told me: YES I CAN DO IT and im here in college, following my dreams to be a great professional, i wasnt easy but if i did it, everybody can do it.
