Course Portfolio

Academic Goal

Over the course of my college years my overall academic goal to achieve here at Millersville is to graduate with a degree in 4 years. To meet this goal, I will take all of my required courses and I will pass them to receive my credits for those courses. I will know that I accomplished this goal at the end of my 4 years by having my degree in my hand at graduation.

Typography Activity

Description Of Typography Activity

When I was first introduced to this assignment, I thought that it was going to be boring. I thought that it was going to be boring because I thought that it was just going to be about typing letters on a document. After Professor Painter went more into detail about the assignment, I realized that it was going to be a fun and interesting activity. In the beginning of the assignment, I had to find my font size of my metal type and I found out that my font size is 24 points. I learned that the standard measurement system for metal typesetting is the point system. To measure the type, you have to use a typographic ruler. On a typographic ruler there are 72 points per inch. During this typography assignment I also learned that if you add leading to the type it will increase the space in between the lines and if you decrease the leading it will decrease space. I am very glad to have worked on this assignment. I am glad that I was able
to work on this assignment because I got to further my knowledge about typography. I thought that is was very cool how I got to print my initials on my paper. One of the topics I learned about was the different classifications of font. I learned that some fonts like serif are great for printed texts. I also learned that Script mimics cursive handwriting and it has a small x-height, but it also reduces the legibility of the type. Another classification of font I learned about is called
Handwritten. This font mimics handwriting which means that the letters do not conjoin.

3D Printed Lego Block

3D Printed Lego Block

Description Of 3D modeling Activity

During this activity we had to use a software that I have never used before. This software was called Fusion. As I opened fusion up I quickly realized that it was a lot like AutoCAD which is a software type that I use in my drafting communications class. In order to make this we had to make a rectangle and drag it out so it had depth. We also had to create circles and drag them out so they also had depth. The thing that was most challenging for me was making it so it was not a solid block. I had to ask my friend for help and then I quickly realized that it was not that hard to do. I really enjoyed this activity because I learned how to create a Lego block in a new type of software that I never used before.

Making a cardboard Lego brick

Cardboard Lego Brick Activity

Description of making the Lego block

While completing this assignment it was very easy for me to see the cube and visually draw it onto the paper and draw the different views of it. In the beginning of this assignment me and my groupmates had a hard time at first trying to create our model from the cardboard. We then realized that we had to stack all of the layers on top of each other which made us realize that it was fairly easy to do. I think that the most helpful learning experiences were definitely watching the video on how to complete the Lego block. We also watched a video on how a 3D printer works which helped us better understand how we should make the Lego block out of the cardboard.

Laser Engraving Activity

Laser Engraving activity

Description of activity

I was very excited to start working on this activity because I never got to use a laser engraver before, and I wanted to learn more about it. After a teacher demonstrated to us on how to use the laser engraver, I quickly realized it was not
going to be very hard to use at all. When it was my turn to use the laser engraver, I followed the instructions and placed my piece of wood inside of the engraver as you can see in the first photo. While completing this activity was very fun, I also learned that the laser engraver has different settings for the depth of how deep you want it to cut into the material and for what type of material you are using. I also learned that in order for it to not get smokey when running the engraver you have to turn on the vent to filter out the smoke.
