April Fools

April Fools’ Day

The first of April is a day when one should expect the unexpected, for this is the day reserved for practical jokesters! You can expect to see friends and family playing jokes on one another; even television and radio hosts join in on the fun and prank their viewers and listeners. While this day has been celebrated for hundreds of years, nobody really knows why we started to observe this day to begin with.slide_343294_3561480_free

The most popular theory of the beginning of April Fools ’ Day dates back to when people in Europe used to celebrate the New Year around April 1st. When Europe switched over to a different calendar in 1582 and started celebrating the New Year on January 1st, not everyone got the memo right away (they didn’t have cell phones back then), and there were still some who celebrated in the spring. The people who didn’t know that the New Year already happened in January and who were celebrating it in the spring were considered gullible, or a fool.

In many English speaking countries, including the United States, the day is spent trying to trick your friends and family, all the while trying to avoid being tricked yourself. On this day you will probably hear “April Fools!” being yelled out, meaning that someone just revealed that they have been tricking someone. April Fools’ Day is also celebrated in many other countries throughout the world, with different traditions to go along with it. This April Fools’ Day, it is important to remember your sense of humor and to be safe.

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a traditionally Irish holiday that has grown into an international celebration of Irish culture in recent years. The day was originally established as a Catholic holiday to honor the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, who lived from the year 385-461.

While St. Patrick’s Day is a historically Irish holiday, many of the modern celebrations actually stem from American soil. In fact, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in the United States over a century before one was held in Ireland as a way to celebrate both Irish and Irish-American culture. Today, the largest St. Patty’s Day celebration is held in New York, followed by Dublin and Birmingham, England. March is also Irish-American Heritage Month.

It’s tradition to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day and common decorations are filled with shamrocks (four leaf clovers) and leprechauns. There’s also the annual McDonald’s Shamrock Shake—but those are in no way actually Irish. Common St. Patrick’s Day festivities include: eating a traditional Irish meal (corned beef and cabbage), drinking, more drinking, and parades. There are local parades in York and Philadelphia.

In the Millersville and Lancaster area, there are a handful of Irish pubs and breweries (for students of age 🙂 ) that hold their own St. Patty’s Day celebrations.

Daylight Savings Time

Get ready to spring forward! Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 13th at 2:00am. While Daylight Savings Time is practiced in many western countries, there is a majority of the world’s population that does not. Not even all US states observe DST. For example, if you travel to the Hoover Dam during the summer and you cross over from Nevada into Arizona, you’ll get the chance to be in two time zones at once!

DaylightSavingTime01

So what is Daylight Savings Time exactly? DST is defined as the “practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that in the evening daylight is experienced an hour longer”. So basically, it’s docking the clocks so you can have more fun in the sun.

This strange practice began in the early 20th century. The United States adopted it in 1918.

So how does this affect you? First, if you have any commitments on Sunday, March 13th, change your clock before you go to bed. Cell phones and other satellite clocks will automatically change—so if you’re a night owl, you can stay up and watch the time jump from 1:59 to 3:00 on its own. Unless you’re prepared to get one hour less sleep than normal, try going to bed an hour early.
