Halloween Costumes on a College Budget

Everyone loves to dress up for Halloween but not everyone loves to pay for Halloween costumes that you will only wear once in their life, maybe twice if you don’t mind repeating an outfit. As a college student, we are always looking for ways to save a few bucks. Here is a list of trendy DIY (Do It Yourself) Halloween costumes that will make you the hit of the party without having to break your bank.

  • An Animal. Pretty much any animal you can think of is easy enough to dress as for Halloween. Do you want to dress as a cat? Find an all-black outfit, paint whiskers and a cat nose on your face, glue paper cat ears to a headband and there you have it! Make it a tiger by drawing some stripes on your face and arms and wearing orange and black. How about a bunny? Do the same thing as before, but choose a color like gray or pink, and make the ears bigger on the headband. Get a cotton ball from any local crafts store, safety pin it to your backside, and you have a bunny costume.
  • A minion. If you have seen the movie despicable me, you know how much of a hit the little yellow minions are. Who wouldn’t want to be one if they could? Well, now you can. For the bottoms, just wear any type of jean, shorts, or leggings. Get a yellow t-shirt from a craft store or department store and a cheap pair of black overalls while you’re at it. The minion eyes can be worn on a headband on your head and can be made yourself as well. Check out this website for detailed steps on how to create this awesome look.
  • A Ghost. Probably the easiest, most cliché Halloween costume ever, a ghost is a great way to be spooky and funny at the same time this Halloween. Literally all you need is a white sheet. You can find one at goodwill, Walmart, or borrow some from someone who is getting rid of them. Take some scissors and cut two holes for your eyes in the middle of the sheet. Place the sheet on your head so that it hangs to the ground and you are now a ghost. Easy, lightweight, and keeping in theme with traditional Halloween costumes.

  • A Bunch of Grapes. You could really dress up as any food for Halloween and it would not be a hard costume to make, but one that really stands out is a bunch of grapes. Underneath, you can just wear any black clothing. For the top aka the grapes, buy at least 2 packs of purple balloons (or green if you prefer green grapes.) Blow up the balloons but not until the day that you are going to wear the costume. When you are ready to not sit down for a while, stick the balloons all over your body with tape, all right next to each other representing a bunch of grapes. Cut out a big leaf out of green construction paper and either glue it to a headband or place it on your shoulder to look like the top of the grape vine. There you have it, a creative, funny fruit costume that everyone will wish they had thought of.

If none of these costumes are interesting to you, Google is a great place to find exactly what you are looking for. Just google search “DIY Halloween Costumes” and the possibilities are endless.

This Year’s Trending Halloween Costumes

Halloween is the time of year when you can dress as anyone or anything that you want without any question. You can look funny, silly, scary, or just plain strange, and no one will think twice about it. Since Halloween is in 2 weeks, here are some of this year’s top trending Halloween costumes according to GQ Magazine that you will definitely be seeing, if not dressing yourself as. In America, you will notice most of these costumes come from popular movies/TV shows at the time.

  • Harley Quinn. Whether you’ve seen it or not, Suicide Squad is one of the year’s most talked about films. This movie was the debut of character Harley Quinn, notorious super villain who can be found right by the Joker’s side. People were so enthralled with Australian actress Margot Robbie’s performance in the movie; it is no wonder that she is the number 1 googled Halloween costume this year. Bonus: add in the joker to make an epic couples costume.
  • A Pirate. It seems cliché but pirates are gaining popularity this October. A great costume for men and women, everyone can live out their childhood dreams of exploring the seven seas with a parrot on their shoulder. Oh, did we forget to mention that a Millersville Marauder is a pirate too?! It only seems right that our mascot is number 4 on GQ’s list.

  • Wonder Woman. Another highly anticipated movie star, Wonder Woman first appeared earlier this year in the hit movie Batman vs. Superman. From this, the actress Gal Gadot has gained fame and a few more movie titles, where she will also play Wonder Woman. Step aside superman, Wonder Woman is this years’ 5th most popular Halloween costume. Tip: you can find virtually any superhero costume in a woman’s style, like batgirl or supergirl.
  • Pokémon. After the release of Pokémon Go earlier this summer, it is no surprise that the most famous Pokémon of all, Pikachu, is on this years’ list. If you want to be original while keeping with the theme, go for any Pokémon, like Charizard or Blastoise.

If Pokémon and superheroes are not your thing, you can never go wrong with dressing up as some kind of animal, a type of food, an emoji, or even one of the presidential candidates (try this at your own risk.) The greatest part about Halloween is that you can celebrate all weekend long, with more than one costume! Happy Halloween!

Popular American Halloween Treats

In America, Halloween is the one day out of the year that you can dress up be whatever you want to be. It is also a day of consuming as much candy as you want and not feeling guilty about it. Halloween is not always just candy though. Read on to find out some of our favorite Halloween goodies that put the treat in ‘Trick-or-Treat.’

  • Arguably the most popular and well-known treat on Halloween is candy corn. Some people love it, some people can’t stand it, but everyone can say that they have at least tried it at some point in their lives. A treat comprised mainly of sugar, corn syrup, and other artificial flavors, it is definitely considered an indulgence. Candy corn comes in different shapes aside from its traditional orange, yellow and white triangles that look like pieces of corn from an ear of corn. It can also come in caramel and chocolate flavors, and is sometimes shaped like pumpkins, making it an appropriate treat not only for Halloween but for all of the fall season.
  • Traditional candy bars seem to be the go-to with moms and dads on Halloween night. Parents fill buckets and bowls of candy and hand them out to little pirate, princesses and superheroes. As a kid, knocking on a door and wondering which candy you were going to receive was what made Halloween so magical. At the end of the night, you’d dump your bag out and gaze at all of your treats, from Hershey’s chocolate bars, to Twizzlers licorice, gummies, KitKats, Reeces, Twix, and so much more. If you had siblings, you got to then trade the candy that you don’t like with them for your favorites.
  • If candy is not your favorite treat, you are not alone. Some people chose to give out snacks for trick-or-treaters on Halloween night instead of sugary candy. Pretzels are a popular treat because virtually everyone likes pretzels. And when those pretzels are shaped like bats and pumpkins, they taste even better. Rice Krispie Treats are another common snack given out on Halloween. Made of marshmallows melted into crispy crunchy rise popped cereal, these sticky snacks are always a hit with kids and adults alike.
  • As mentioned in a previous article about popular fall foods, apples are a favorite for everyone. What happens when you take that apple, put it on a stick, and dip it in caramel, chocolate, or hard red candy? You get the wondrous treat that is a candy apple. Candy apples are a delicious alternative to traditional candy bars that people sometimes give out on Halloween as well.

You may be too old to go door to door asking adults who are not much older than you for free treats, but you are never too old to enjoy Halloween. Grab yourself a bag of your favorite candy to indulge in, or have a Halloween costume party and provide these fun, festive treats to your friends. Either way, Halloween is a holiday that can be enjoyed by all.

The Best Halloween Movies

Much like you will see with Christmas movies during the upcoming holidays, Halloween is a holiday that also comes with its own genre of movies. Sometimes these movies are scary and spooky, but some are just fun and family friendly. Here is a list of our favorite Halloween movies for those who like a thriller and those who do not.

  • Arguably, one of the most famous Halloween movies of our generation is Disney’s Halloween Town. This is a family fun movie about a young girl and her two siblings who grew up with a mother who discouraged them from all things Halloween. Until one day, their grandmother shows up who they do not know is actually a witch. Halloween Town is a classic favorite for people of all ages. It is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again and not get sick of.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Tim Burton movie that, if you know the types of movies that Tim Burton makes, keeps just in line with what you would expect. An animated movie about a world called Halloweentown where its inhabitants are responsible for scaring people in the ‘real world’ on Halloween. The main character, Jack Skellington, is tired of this routine and ends up mysteriously in a dimension where it is always holly, jolly Christmas time. This movie is a family friendly movie that highlights both Halloween and Christmas in a slightly spooky but interesting way.
  • While the Harry Potter movies may not be centered around Halloween at all, they are still rich with wizards, goblins, witches, and other magical elements. These wildly famous movies are a good alternative to watch if you do not like being scared or Halloween in general.
  • Hocus Pocus is another family friendly, classic Halloween movie. A tale about 3 witches who try to stay eternally young by taking the souls of children. When a boy disrupts them from their century long sleep, they come back searching for children in modern day suburbia. This movie’s plot may seem twisted and spooky, but this is actually a humorous movie that is fun for all ages.

As you can see, Halloween doesn’t always have to be scary and spooky. If scary movies are more your style, there are plenty of Halloween themed thrillers out there for you. Just make sure you don’t watch them alone. Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Carving 101

Americans love pumpkins. We love pumpkin seeds, pumpkin flavored coffee, pumpkin bread, pumpkin picking and most of all, carving pumpkins!

Global Ed is hosting a free pumpkin carving party on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00pm! To help get you ready for the ultimate Halloween activity, here are some tips on how to carve the most spooktacular pumpkin.

Tools you will need: a pumpkin, carving knives, a big spoon, newspaper/paper towels to put down to because it will be messy, and a small tea candle. (If you are going to Global Ed’s pumpkin carving party, everything will be provided for you)

  1. Select the perfect pumpkin!
  2. Pick a design! It can be spooky, funny, traditional, or something completely made up by you. Some people like to find a stencil online, others like to free-hand their designs.
  3. If you are using a stencil, find a design online, the simpler the design, the easier the carving will be.
  4. Cut out the outline of the design you want.
  5. Hold it against the pumpkin and, using a permanent marker, trace along the outside of the design onto the pumpkin.
  6. If you are drawing your own design, use a permanent marker and draw directly onto the pumpkin.
  7. Before you carve into your pumpkin, you will need to cut a circle around the stem of the pumpkin and remove the top like a lid. Do not cut completely vertical, cut on an angle so that this lid can later be placed back on and will stay in place.
  8. Using a big spoon, scoop out all of the insides and seeds of the pumpkin.
  9. After the inside is clean, now you can turn the pumpkin on its side and start carving out your design.
  10. Be careful while carving because if you mess up, you can’t go back.
  11. When you have finished carving and removed all of the chunks of pumpkin that you cut out, place a tea candle into your pumpkin.
  12. Put the top back on, turn off the lights or wait for it to get dark, and watch your masterpiece glow!

You are now an expert at pumpkin carving and all things Halloween. If you mess up or simply cannot decide on a design, make more than one pumpkin! Your pumpkin should last about a week to a week and a half.

Another option people traditionally follow is painting their pumpkins instead of carving them. This way is a lot less messy and the pumpkin will last longer!

How to Dress for Fall

As the days go by and the leaves change, you may have noticed that is slowly getting colder outside. Gone are the days of sweating walking to class and worrying about sunburn, because fall is here!

Fall is the time for many wonderful things like Halloween, Thanksgiving, football season and more. However, it is also the season where the weather change can be dramatic and the common cold makes its way around. It is not uncommon for it to be warm and sunny one day, and cloudy and chilly the next. To prepare you for this changing weather, here is a list of fall appropriate clothing that is also very fashionable.

  • If you haven’t already, it is time to retire your flip flops, sandals and thongs. Boots are not only stylish; they are practical for Pennsylvania autumns. They keep your feet warm and protect you from the mud that always seems to come with the changing weather. Boots come in all colors, styles, lengths, and are made for both men and women. Athletic sneakers and tennis shoes are a great alternative to boots as well. Anything that has a closed toe front, really.
  • The saddest time of the year has to be packing away your summer shorts, but your legs will thank you. It is officially time to break out your pants, jeans, and leggings.
  • Fall is great but it is also hard to pick an appropriate jacket to wear when it is very cold walking to your 8 am class, but pretty warm by the time you’re done class at 2 pm. I would recommend getting a light jacket. You can wear it in a brisk morning, and then put it in your backpack if you get warm later on.
  • You won’t need gloves and scarves to keep you warm quite yet, however fashion scarves are very trendy for the fall. They dress up any outfit and can also be gender neutral.
  • Fall colors are warm colors that tend to complement the changing leaves. Colors like maroon, olive green, burnt orange, dark red, deep yellow, and brown/tan you will see everywhere.
  • For those cooler days, a hat or a knit beanie are great articles to own to keep your head and ears warm.

Some additional accessories that will help you out this Fall:

  • For those people out there who love coffee all year around, you finally have an excuse to drink it hot. Grab yourself a portable coffee mug with a lid and take a steaming cup with you to class. It will keep your hands warm on the walk and hopefully keep you awake during lectures.
  • Fall is the season of dry air, so it is smart to keep a small bottle of lotion with you wherever you go. Dry air also means chapped lips, so chapstick/lip balm is a must.

These are just a few basic tips to help you adjust to the changing weather. Now that it is officially here, enjoy Autumn, because before we know it, winter is here and snow is a whole other story.
