Overview: For the Materials Processing activity, we used Adobe Illustrator to create a vector design, then engraved and cut it onto a wooden keychain using a laser engraver. We practiced setting up files correctly, choosing materials, and understanding the technical steps the machine follows. The process required patience and attention to detail, from building the vector image to running the engraving equipment safely. This activity showed how digital design connects to physical production and reinforced the importance of precision when working with real materials.
Technical Concepts:
- Basics of how materials are processed
- How vector files are created in Illustrator
- How laser engraving and cutting functions work
- Safety, settings, and location of the Osburn laser engraver
Brief Reflection: Although I had prior experience with laser cutting from high school, this assignment taught me how to utilize new software and a different machine. The step-by-step visuals helped, and hands-on use built real understanding. Creating my own keychain reminded me how much I enjoy making things and confirmed this is the right major for me.
