Dr. Valentin-Marquez Spring 2022 Project

Dr. Valentin-Marquez wrote a chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Variationist Approaches to Spanish (2022) titled “The sociolinguistic conditioning of lateralization of /r/: Variation in three Puerto Rican communities.” Dr. Valentin-Marquez writes that his work “is a comparative analysis of the use of a typical dialectal feature of Puerto Rican Spanish in cities with different language and dialect contact situations (Grand Rapids, Michigan; Lancaster, PA; and Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico). The study suggests that the speakers’ social networks and their level of integration into their respective Puerto Rican community condition the articulation frequency of a syllable-final simple vibrant (a “flap” or “tap”) as a lateral sound.”
