FYEX 100 Course e-Portfolio Blog: Spring 2025

1. Try Something New – Part 1 & 2

Goal: For 30 days, I committed to following a study routine to improve time management and academic performance.

Plan: I studied 2–3 hours every day, splitting time between reviewing concepts and doing practice problems. I tracked my progress using a calendar and adjusted the plan as needed.

Outcome: My grades improved, and I became more confident and disciplined. This plan taught me the importance of consistency and reflection in achieving academic success.

2. Financial Literacy: Cost of College

By calculating my total cost of attending Millersville in Spring 2025, I realized college involves more than just tuition. I spent $8,332.77 total, including books, food, and transportation. Breaking it down helped me see how each class costs nearly $1,666.55. Knowing this motivated me to show up, stay focused, and value every lecture.

3. Typography & Reflection

Before this assignment, I didn’t know typography was so detailed. I learned about different font types, sizes, and how spacing (leading) affects how text looks. I also found out the difference between a typeface and a font. By experimenting with fonts, I realized how design choices can impact how a message is received. I now use this knowledge to create more professional and readable documents.

4. Materials Processing & Reflection

In this assignment, I explored how tools like laser engravers and calipers are used in making products. I learned about raster vs. vector graphics and how precision tools help in design and production. Understanding how materials are measured and cut gave me a better appreciation of manufacturing processes and how design affects product quality.

5. Worker Safety Report

After studying OSHA’s top violations, I wrote a report on how poor safety practices—like lack of fall protection or improper machine guards—lead to injuries. I discussed how solutions like training, equipment maintenance, and safety procedures can reduce accidents. This made me more aware of the importance of engineering controls in protecting workers.

6. Construction (BIM) Report

I learned how Building Information Modeling (BIM) helps in planning and managing construction projects. By combining 3D models with schedules and budgets, BIM improves efficiency and reduces errors. A great example is the Crossrail project in London, which used BIM for clash detection and time planning. This assignment showed me how digital tools can transform industries.

7. 3D Modeling and Printing & Reflection

For this project, I built a Lego brick model using Fusion 360 and then created a physical model using cardboard. I learned how to measure in 3D using the X, Y, and Z axes and how layering works in 3D printing. Using tools like fillet and shell commands gave me a better understanding of modeling software and problem-solving in design.

8. Academic and Career Goal

My SMART goal is to earn a 3.8 GPA in my Business Administration classes next fall. To reach this, I’ll track my grades, study regularly, and join a study group. I believe this is achievable through planning, effort, and using campus resources. My deadline is December 15, 2025, and I’ll keep checking my progress every week.

9. Wellness Week: Artful Solutions

I attended the Artful Solutions session during Wellness Week and created a meaningful drawing. It helped me reflect, relax, and express emotions creatively. This activity reminded me that mental wellness is just as important as academic performance.

10. Community Engagement: Immigrant Advocacy Session

I attended a session called “Advocate, Educate, & Empower Immigrant Communities.” It connected with my background and made me feel seen. I learned how policies affect immigrant lives and what steps can help. It inspired me to become more active in supporting immigrant voices on campus.

11. Reading Strategies Reflection

Effective reading means more than just finishing the text. I learned how to plan reading time, calculate reading speed, and use the SQ3R strategy—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. These tools help me understand and remember more, especially with dense college readings.

Conclusion

This course helped me grow in many areas—from technical skills like 3D modeling and laser engraving to life skills like time management and self-reflection. Every assignment taught me something new about myself, my studies, or the world around me. This blog is a snapshot of my journey, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.
