Note-Taking Strategies

I always take notes every reading I have if not I will end up forgetting everything. I always rewrite my notes so i can memorize them easier, and get a better understanding of what I’m reading. The one moment that stood out to me for when I was taking notes is during a reading that Dr. Corkery assigned which was “The Color of Water” by James McBride. I was reading a chapter that I didn’t fully understand and I remember writing down certain words, and parts of the story that helped me keep a imagine of where, when, and what is happening in that time the book takes place. If I do not takes notes I wont remember much for what I read, but I have to write down vocabulary words so I can remember that the one word I didn’t remember is important. I can better my reading strategies by trying new ideas, and instead of just trying to visualize where the story is taking place I can try to actually try to envision myself there.

Note Taking Strategies

Taking notes is very important to me because it helps me understand what I’m reading better. Depending on the article I am able to gain a visual understanding of what I’m reading and get a better idea of the entire plot and setting. Depending on the reading that Dr. Garcia assigns us for homework I am able to have a clear visual but other times I get blocked because I don’t understand it. When i don’t understand the material I am reading I try and write down key words and words that I don’t truly understand and search them up and peace the information together clearly. I noticed that my method for note taking became a visual idea because when I was reading the “Color of Water” for Dr. Corkery’s class I would say one word and try to visualize it as I read along. I noticed that as I visualized the story in my head as I read that I could understand everything much better with a picture in my head of each word. One of my strengths that connect to my reading well is responsibility because I’m always making sure that I’m responsible for reading the assignments and making sure I completely understand what I’m reading before I submit anything or stop reading it.

Reflections on my new reading strategies

Dr. Garcia and Dr. Corkery classes allowed me to use my reading strategies more than I was used too. The main strategy I use is asking myself who, what, when, how, compare, describe, explain, list when formulating questions. I also try to paint an image of the story as I read. Using these strategies give me a better understanding of everything I am reading.

The first strategy that I used to help me understand the readings that Dr. Corkery and Dr. Garcia assign is the who, what, when, where, how, compare, describe, explain, list when formulating questions. This helps me more than i noticed at first because it helps give me a clear idea of the main theme and what is going on and mainly the key points. They mainly helped me because it allowed me to categories my thoughts and organized my thought process.

The second strategy that I found to be helpful is trying to paint an image or certain words or sentences throughout the story. I try to write down key words that stick out to me so that I can search them up and get the exact definition and try to imagine the exact setting and the time period of the story and just try to gain a better understanding.
