Day 3- 3/05/2012

Today we checked up on our plants and we’re happy to see that they were doing well for being in our hydroponic system.  Cody notcied that Amber had put some of the seeds in the rockwool upside down.  Worried that they wouldn’t correct themselves and we would lose some plants Cody took the seeds out of the rockwool and just flipped them over.  This should be an easy fix to the problem! Also, we checked the pH just to make sure that it was at our desired level.  It was a little high still so Cody put a small amount of pH down in it and that got everything back to normal.

Day 2- 2/29/2012

SeedsPLANTING DAY!

Today we were happy to see our seeds had sprouted so we were ready to plant.  We started by dampening the rock wool, then we placed the seeds in it.  We had trouble finding the right pH level.  We had initially filled the PVC pipe with water, but had to empty it because of the wrong pH.  After carefully getting the right pH level of about 6 to 6.5, we poured the water into the hydroponic system.  We want our pH around 7, but because the rockwool will raise the pH, we wanted it a little lower before pouring it into the system.  Hopefully all goes well!!

Day 1- 2/27/2012

GERMINATION DAY!

Today we started our journey toward growing our first hydroponic system.  We decided to use Mesclun seeds.  At first we wanted to grow Cherry Tomatoes, but after seeing how long they take to germinate and harvest, we decided Mesclun seeds would be better.  We want to be able to harvest and hopefully eat what we grow before this semester ends.  To germinate the seeds, we placed a large variety of the seeds on a damp paper towel.  We made sure there was more than we needed incase some did not sprout.  Next, we placed another damp paper towel on top, and rolled the paper towels up.  We put them in a plastic bag and Amber took it with her to make sure the seeds stayed damp.
