My Fall Semester

I am very nervous about the fall semester but I am going to walk in orientation and classes with confidence because of all the things I have done this whole month. I am planning on using the starategies that I have learned in learing how to learn class while taking notes and reading. I had taken a class through AFJROTC regaring note taking in high school, but I never used the strategies. while taking notes for Dr. Garcia’s class I tried some of the strategies, such as rereading, answering questions, writing summaries of the paragraphs and asking myself questions based on the topic to know if I have any background knowledge.

I am going to use these strategies in the fall semester as well because they really helped me be more detailed in class and it also allowed me to understand the prompt more. I am going to be able to answer any questions asked on a specific topic because of the notes I will take. I feel more confidence about this because I always used to have unnecessary notes in my notebook which were useless but now most of the notes I take are useful, they are usually used in the quizzes and exams.

whenever I take notes I will always reread the prompt to make sure I have the facts right and I have all the information I need. I am going to be able to answer the teacher in class by understand the reading.  I will research for the world that I don’t understand and if its complicated I will ask someone for help.

to be able to keep my note taking strategies, I will use them every time I take notes, I will also be practicing will all the reading I get, just so I am able to refer back to it  when there is time for exams and other things.

Reading Strategies #2

Applying new note taking strategies in Dr. Garcia’s class was confusing at first but as I begin to reread the articles, and used Cornell method to answer the question after the reading, which helped a lot. I was able to understand everything with more details. Most of the readings from Dr. Garcia’s class have questions at the end of each articles, so I used those question to maintain my understanding of the reading.

Some specific example can be from reading the article called ” when brothers share a wife”. There were questions at the end, which made me reassured of my understanding.  I learned about 3 types of marriage: monogamy, fraternal polyandry and polygyny. To be able to understand these words, I had to reread and take side notes.  I also did a research in Google for the definitions of these words. I was able to compare the definition from the article and Google, which made my notes more detailed.

My five strengths were learner, positivity, strategic, belief and restorative. I can connect them to my note taking methods by saying that I am a learner. I need to be able to understand something fully before I move on with it. I am always positive about trying out new things and methods if it works for me. I used different strategies to be able to understand my readings and I am always going back and forth comparing my understandings.

My Reading Strategies

Out of all the reading strategies, I tried asking questions on the ideas and headings while reading for  Dr. Garcia and Dr. Corkery class. i usually used to just jump to the reading and just bring out a summary of the article or reading, but asking question about things that I didn’t understand was very helpful. It helped me understand the reading with more details.  while reading i also asked questions referencing how, where, when, and who. That mad me wonder more about the reading, making me take notes on it.

I did try to go straight to the questions at the end but I would forget them after  started to read. It made me confused and I felt as if the questions were making the reading more complicated. writing notes was the most helpful strategy for me because i could always go back to it. Every time I forgot, I could just go to my notebook and review it. For example, when I was reading the article ” little bit black, but not all the way”, I was trying to ask myself questions and it helped me a lot, but if i had looked at the questions provided by the reading it would be complicating.

I would like to keep taking notes on any reading and want to keep asking myself questions on them. I always want to reread the articles but I get lazy most of the time, so I want to try to reread. I like finding out the main ideas of the reading reading and summarizing but since I have learned to find information in detail, I want to be able to remember everything I have read.

I can make new learning strategies my new habit by following them every-time I read. I want to be specific with what I have understood. so from now on I want to try to reread so I can understand better. I think re reading would work because when ever I watch movies twice I get new information out of them.

My First Blog- How to Cook Nepali Styled MoMo (dumplings)

The first time I remember eating a Momo was when I was 10 years old.  it tasted so good that I wanted to try to make it at home. I told my mother about it and she said that she had never cooked anything like it before. In our house we only cooked samosa ( which is a baked dish with potato, beans and Masalas fillings) in any special occasions. I talked to my aunt and she told me she knew how to make it, so I asked her to help me. Because my aunt had stayed in the city, she knows how to cook a lot of food. she asked me to get the ingredient, which are:

  • Dumplings wraps
  • Lettuce
  • Grounded meat
  • Masala (seasonings)
  • Salt
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Tomato ( for the sauce)
  • water
  • salt
  • Momo cooker( 3 steps pots)

I got all the stuff I needed and waited for my aunt. it was a Saturday so she came in the evening. she sat me down and told me to watch. she took out the wraps and placed it in the table. Then she cut the lettuce and onion in to small pieces.  she mixed onion, meat, lettuce, smashed garlic, salt, and masalas. she moved it to a different bowl and started heating water in the bottom pot of the Momo cooker. while the water was heating she put the mixing in the wrap and started twisting them to make a beautiful little Momos which looked like the on I ate. After she had made few she put it in the second and third pot and put it on top of the pot which had water for it to cook. While she was making it, it seemed so easy but, when I was asked to do it, it suddenly became so complicated. I was missing steps and made a huge mess.

First time making MoMo was a total disaster, so on the second time, i watched carefully and started taking notes. I improved then the last time but it was still not good enough, so every time after school I would come home and practice with other indigents as well. when i finally learned to make the mixture i got stuck with the twisting part. so after i came to the united states my friend taught me through YouTube videos, which was so much easier than just watching it in person and not being able to repeat it.
