Creative Writing Contest

One Book, One Campus
Creative Writing Contest
Win $250 for the bookstore

Inspiration:  With the exception of native populations already on this land, our U. S. citizenry arrived here as refugees, opportunists, adventurers, slaves, servants. We have many stories to tell of how our families came to this land. Enrique’s Journey, by Sonia Nazario, gives us one very dramatic account, but anyone’s transition to a new land and culture can be engaging. Retell—re-imagine—the story of one of your family member’s experience coming to this country. You will likely need to interview family members, but also use your imagination to recreate their perspective. The two top entries will receive a $250 bookstore certificate, sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union. The judges will be looking for stories no longer than 1250 words (typed, double-spaced) that:

• engage creatively with immigration theme(s);
• present an intelligible experience on the theme;
• demonstrate effective use of narrative form.

Instructions:  All MU undergraduates are eligible for this contest. Submit your story to the secretary in the English Department by 11:00 a.m. on November 1, 2011. Make sure your submission is typed, double-spaced, pages stapled. Put the title only at the top of the first page. Put the story title, your name, phone number, address on a separate sheet, as well. Submit the story and contact sheet together.

Two winners will be given $250 to spend at the bookstore.
