Learning by Doing Course Portfolio

Academic Goal

My goal for this year and for the rest of my college life would be to maintain a 3.0 GPA. I would like to do this so that I can prove it to myself that I can. Over my highschool years my GPA was not the best so I made it my goal to be the better version of my self, I decided to set this specific goal because I want to do good in school and find a job after I graduate. I will make sure to stay on top of my classes and assignements so that the GPA does not go down. At the moment I have to do better because I still miss some assignements so I have to get on top of that and not let that happen for the next semester.

Safety Engineering controls

For this activity we were able to participate in a sort of role playing for the class, we were people in a lab and we were meant to extract the toxic popcorn from the middle of a desk and put it into a jar that would contain it we had to use the materials that we were provided to simulate what it would be like in an actual lab setting. This activity was actually one of the most fun, it made us think critically of solutions to the current toxic popcorn situation. i would do this again because it allowed me to learn by doing and thinking critically, which I enjoyed.

3D Printing & Modeling

For this segment we did a couple of activities, the first activity we started with was creating a lego brick out of cardboard, which in my opinion was fun even when everyone in the class did it wrong because we were supposed to build them layer by layer and no one did that. The next activity that we did was creating a 3D lego brickin Fusion, this cativity was particularly fun because I learned alot about how to work on Fusion and how to make 3D models. The last activity we did was we got taken to the 3D printing room and we saw first hand how the 3D printers work. At then end of it we were able to take one of the lego pieces home as an example of what it would look like if we were to print out designs on  Fusion. all of these activities were thing sthat I had never treid before, so it was fun to be able to experience them.

Electronics

I feel that I learned alot in this segment, this may have been because I didnt know much about electronics before this. The activity that we did for this was attempting to connect wires in differnet ways so that we could turn on a small light bulb, there were multiples challanges that we faced some of which were simply needing a new lightbulb, and others were that the lightbulb not turning on in the slightest. I really did enjoy this activity it was hands on and allowed me to learn while doing. While I do not believe that the route of electronics is not for me I see why someone would enjoy endulging in the world of electronics

Construction

For this segement we had to define what construction meant, I wrote, “Construction is the creation of something new, something that was not there before.” the assingment for this segment was writing a paper on BIM, with this paper I believe I learned a multitude of things about how contrustion has chnaged over the years, and how beneficial BIM is in todays world, right before this paper we did an activity in class when we had to hold up a bottle of water with the least amount of paper. The class activity was a challenging yet fun and competative one, and I would love to do it again but maybe in different circumstances and with differnet materials.

Materials

Everything is made from materials!! For this activity we actullay did someting super interesting and actually pretty fun we laser engraved a piece of cherry wood. For this project we had full creative freedomof what we could put on the piece of wood which I personally enjoyed, I learned alot about laser engravers and alot about materials in general, I learned what the differences were between Raster and Vector on the laser engraver, we learned a little on how calipers work, and alot more. Overall I really enjoyed this activity and I would do it again.

Typograpy

Typography, the art of writing. During this Activity I leanered alot that i did not know about writing. There is alot of aspects that go into typing and writing so that it looks appealing to the human eye. I learned that there are guidelines that have to be to be followed so that the writing looks decent, these are a series of lines, that let you know if you have gone too far so  that the text does not look weird.
