I really have enjoyed this experience and getting familiar with different styles of communication methods among educators. I liked being able to try MUVideo, as well as the blogging experience that I never have tried before this class. I personally like blogging more, so I am glad that I had more than one experience during the semester to play around with this.

Moving Forward…

I am planning on using blogging in the future because I think it is a great way to get ideas out to others. I could see myself using blogging with my own personal classroom as a weekly newsletter-type of thing, or maybe use this as a way to share exciting videos or information I may come across.

How to Talk to Young Children About Covid-19

Even though I do not have kids of my own, I know for a fact that there are many kids who are confused and scared about the certain living conditions we are facing.

So… How do we talk to kids about the Corona Virus?

Kids may need more help finding answers to their questions in the ...

>Ask children what they know already about the Corona Virus.

Kids are a lot smarter than many give them credit for. Also, depending on what age the child is, they can get a lot of information off of the internet or through their friends. It is so important to check and see where their information is coming from and how accurate it is. As a parent or guardian, good sources that are reputable to show children could be through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or KidsHealth.

What is accuracy? - Quora

The best thing to do for your child is to see where the child is and what they know, and what they may need during this time. Offer your comfort and most importantly, honesty.

>Check in with kids often.

This is a time where many people are having a struggle with maintaining good mental health. Kids are the same. Have conversations often to see how children are doing. There most definitely will be a lot of different emotions during this time, but it’s important to make sure kids are staying healthy, both physically and emotionally.

>Encourage children to ask questions and to communicate how they are feeling often.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. These are unique times and there will be many changes in each person’s life.

>Teach children ways in which they can prevent the spread of germs.

Talk about things such as social distancing when taking out the trash if you live in a crowded neighborhood, washing hands frequently, wearing a mask in public areas, and things such as coughing into their arms if they need to do so.

You Always Care For Your Children, But What About You?

Pandemic. Most people were very unfamiliar with this word a few months ago. Now, it’s sadly a part of our new reality. And additionally, many parents are focused on their families, how to support themselves financially, and the near future.

But… What about you?

Mental health is something that not many people spend much time thinking about. Now is a time when many people are struggling with their mental health due to a continuous wave of stress.

What can I do to alleviate some of my stress?

In this blog post, I wanted to give a variety of self-care options for parents whom haven’t thought that far, due to a variety of other things on their mind.

  1. Get connected to see other friends and parents via Skype, Google Hangouts, or Zoom.    *Talking with others is a great way to relieve stress, see how others are doing, and to see others’ perspectives about the current situation.
  2. Do an at home workout.     *Exercise helps to release stress and tension from your body and helps improve your overall mood by releasing endorphins (the “feel good” chemical) into your body.
  3. Make a homemade meal.   *Cooking takes a while, but is a great, tasty use of time.
  4. Listen to music.    *Music is known for its many benefits such as relieving anxiety, improving your overall mood, and more.
  5. Color, paint, or make a craft.   *Who said coloring is just for kids? Exploring with different mediums of art is a great way to improve focus, and like the other reasons previously listed, helps to reduce stress and anxiety!

6. Read a book.   *Reading is a great distraction and great form of entertainment that can take your mind off of things for awhile.

7. Take some time for yourself.   *Sometimes, there will be a time where you need to be alone. Take this time to think, breathe, and relax. Light a candle, take a bath, or take a walk.

8. Play video games.   *What? Video Games? Yes. Playing video games helps to stimulate relaxation, improves problem solving skills, promotes multitasking skills, and is a great way to bring families together in friendly competition.

9. Have a movie-marathon with your family.   *What better time is there than now to watch all eight movies of the Harry Potter series?

10. Create DIY STEM projects to work on with your family.   *Schools are starting to integrate more STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) projects into their lessons. What better way to kill time than to make a birdhouse or plant a garden?

11. Have a family game night.   *During hard times, nothing is better than having quality time spent with your family over snacks, games, and great memories being made.
