Coming to Millersville as an Out of State Student

Choosing The ‘Ville
“Where do you want to go to college?” “What are your plans after high school?” “How far from home will you be?”. It seemed everyone in my life was asking these questions when I was a Junior in high school. I had no idea at the time. I didn’t know if I wanted to be far or close to home, a big or small university, or even what career I was aiming for following college. All I knew was that I wanted to attend college, and that I really loved working with animals. My guidance counselor printed me a page with a mere 6 universities that had the Animal Behavior major. There were no programs in my home state of New Jersey. My mom and I went out on a road trip across a few different states to tour each of my options. First stop, Millersville University.
From the moment I went on the tour, I immediately fell in love with Millersville! All of the student tour guides were so warm and welcoming. As my mom and I were waiting for the tour to start, the current students asked questions about my life and who I was. It felt like they genuinely cared about me finding the best fit school for my future. The campus is homey and beautiful. I appreciate how there are newer buildings on campus mixed in with classic looking. None of the other colleges compared to the feeling that Millersville gave me, and I knew that Millersville would be my future home.
Arriving On Campus
Coming from a different state, I knew no one coming in. I posted about myself on the Millersville Class of 2022 Facebook page, and was able to select roommates with similar interests and personalities. This was the best decision that I made coming in. Having roommates that I was happy and comfortable around made the transition so much easier. We were able to grow into very close friends who I am still living with today.
Outside of my roommates, the Orientation Program also helped me make a smooth transition into college life. My orientation leader guided us around the campus, ate all our first meals with us, and broke the ice so we could all have familiar faces to go to. This experience was very helpful because it allowed me to feel part of a community, and not alone on my first few days. I learned about the resources on campus that I still use to this day. There was a lot of information during Orientation, but more importantly time to get to know my peers. As time went on, I was able to form new friendships through my classes, the residence halls, and clubs.
Now, I’m a Marauder
Today I am very happy to say that I feel at home at Millersville, and not like a lonely student from a different state. I have joined the club “Paws on Deck” and have been able to raise a service dog on campus. I also found employment for both the university Ticket Booth, as well as within the SHARP Team. Working on campus helps me discover more about what the university has to offer and connect with peers. My major department as well as the entire Lancaster area have presented me with fun and unique opportunities over the past few years.
Overall, Millersville and the university community sincerely made the transition to both the state and the university so much easier. I am thankful every day for the positive college experience that I have had so far and am proud to be a part of the Marauder Family.
